Monster 797 Disappointment

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Kontiki, Aug 18, 2019.

  1. 990 superduke ;)

  2. Brutale 800

All the clunks and rattles you could ever ask for

  3. The 796 is worth a try if you’re looking to stay on a monster .. or the 821- the 797 is pretty much the old 696, which didn’t compare well to the 796

  4. The 821 is even more bland than the 797.

Try a Street Triple RS. Sounds like exactly what you are after.

  5. Heck, thinking of buying a 797.i have a disability that means I need a sadate bike ( hopefully that's spelt right)

  6. I preferred the 797 to the 821, its more fun. But others seem to think otherwise. .

Too many people look at the power on the spec sheet and ignore it without even trying the bike. IMHO the 797 is the best Monster and that includes the 1200.

  7. I agree. I think that’s the last and best of the “proper” Monsters in that it’s air cooled and it looks like a Monster but is also much prettier than the original 620-S4R shape. In fact I’m seriously considering trading up to an 1100s or Evo from my 796 in the near future as it’s the best (as in most enjoyable in most situations) bike I’ve ever owned.

  8. We all like different things!

The original shape and styling is easily the best looking without the spagehetti pipes and the black or red frames. Don't even mention the front light!

I don't want lots of electronics or ABS on a Monster. Its a naked old school bike - though the fuel injection is a must.

The last of the classic air cooled -with a few engine mods- makes for a simple & powerful bike. 1000ie or a 900. Best of the bunch.

  9. Horses for courses - I don’t like the original shape much as it looks a bit broken backed and the tank is too big for the proportions. I think the CEO of Ducati at the time agreed because I’ve read somewhere that the name “Monster” came about because when he was shown the clay model, he exclaimed “It’s a monster!” (ie: ugly). I also prefer the modern headlamp to the ones on the old models as it looked like they’d basically just harvested the set up from a WW2 anti aircraft spotlight.

I think the 796 and 1100 keep some of the original styling cues (the bulbous tank, short tail and odd riding position) but tweak the looks from something which previously was “borderline boiler” to “unusual but pretty”

  10. I think the CEO of Ducati was up for selling any kind of parts bin bike. He was also a Pink Floyd fan who was familiar with the lyric
"It's a hell of a start, it could be made into a monster, If we all pull together as a team"
As they were just as likely to go bankrupt as not, a simple bike using tested mechnicals was unlikely to cause them any issues, and they had nothing to lose by trying.

The current second generation Monsters are great bikes. They are faster, better equipped and have superior handling. They resemble the original in some respects. They are not simple, cut back, no frills bikes which was the original concept.

"The Monster was symptomatic of a time when we needed to go back to simple things. Only the Monster with its particular type of frame & geometry was capable of interpreting this need for simplicity" - Miguel Galluzzi. Claudio Castiglioni & Massimo Bordi agreed. So did the public.
