Syncronising Carbs On 1998 750ss With Carb Heating Kit Fitted

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by dhilley, Aug 12, 2019.

  1. I want to syncro carbs on 98 750ss but pipe from heating kit in the way. I have moved and reconnected oil cooler but oil pipe for heater obscures the syncro screw. What to do?

  2. And welcome Dave :)

  4. Hello

  5. Welcome to the forum.

  6. Move it out of the way?

  7. Dear oldrider, I was hoping someone had similar problem and solved it. I would have to take off battery and airbox to reach oil pipes and put them back on each time I balanced the carbs. Then take them off and back on again to replace oil pipes. Or I could just remove the oil pipes, or move them around so they dont get in the way, or something else. Maybe I'll just have to remove the oil pipes. ThanksDave

  8. Can you not hook or push them out of the way??
I know it’s not easy even with no pipes in the way though
    A head torch might help

  9. No, its solid pipe bolted to carb. I might be able to reorganise them to keep em outoftheway. I just have to take the airbox off and have a look.

  10. Hello Carr 01 and GunZenBomZ

  11. Solid pipe. No wonder you have a problem. I was expecting flexible - my SS didn’t have heated carbs.
I have a foot long screwdriver I used to use for balancing, I’d hate to try it with anything shorter

  12. I used a 350mm long screwdriver (the next size down from normal Philips / Pozidrive).
I wrapped my right arm in something that wouldn't melt (because an exhaust burn on the forearm is nasty....it only happened once).
I laid on my back with a mini Maglite in the left hand (or in my mouth, when I was blipping the throttle).

I had to remove the oil cooler from it's mounting but I can't recall if I pull it down or push it up to get the screwdriver onto the balance screw.

I hung the balance gauge off the left clip-on so I could read it while laying down.....my left hand could reach the throttle.

My heater pipes were flexy braided, but they were never in the way.

My advice is change the heater pipes from rigid to braided......vibration could cause rigid ones to crack.

  13. Hello Arquebus, had me giggling at all I went through trying to work on my first 750ss. I think your right - replace the pipes if i wont to keep the carbs heated. My other 750 didn't have heated carbs but I don't remember it suffering from carb icicng even in winter unlike my 900ss which suffered from icing even in summer. So i might just disconnect the pipes.

  14. The heaters on my 750 worked fine.

  15. dear Arquebus, so should I keep them on and find pipes/hoses I can keep out of the way. I balanced my other 750 every year.
