Bmw Streetguard 2 Suit Leaks Like A Fooking Sieve

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Firebladeboy, Aug 18, 2019.

  1. Think you might be wrong there Paul. If you could prove even after all this time it's not fit for purpose, it's still with the retailer not the manufacturer you have the contract of purchase with.
    But I'm probably wrong.

  2. Retailer will offer 12m as consumer act, after that good luck!

  3. What water proofing membrane is in the garment?

  4. It's a good question and I've thrown out the labels that came with it. Let me do some googling.

  5. All I'm seeing is "BMW Climate Membrane" so they've rebranded someone's. Dunno whose though.

  6. OK, figured this out and it's the C-Change membrane by Schoeller of Switzerland. Everything I read about this says how great it is but I'm wondering 2 things:

    1) It being so hi-tech a material, is it possible it's just dirty and that's buggering up the membrane function?
    2) If I Nikwax it, isn't that REALLY going to bugger up the membrane function!!??

Anyone got any insight into this stuff?

  7. Nikwax or Grangers would be safe to use on breathable membranes. Contact the seller/manufacturer for a definitive answer though. If after washing and re activating the material it still leaks like a tea bag then I’d say it’s faulty. Only have experience of Gore stuff. But if the pores are clogged with dirt etc then it will quite possibly fail.

  8. My experience of textiles is that they are very light and comfortable compared to leathers, lots of options with venting and layering etc but the drop in waterproof liners mean that the outer layer gets wet and needs drying (unless you have a very expensive laminated suit). Long story short is that my preferred combo is a textile suit and a waterproof oversuit. Seems to work well.

What's been said about dirt / techwash is bang on. It's fails when dirty.

RST are bringing out a laminated version of their adventure suit for 2020 and this will be priced inline with their current models. This interests me greatly. Although I like Dainese and A* I find RST increasingly hard to beat. On merit and not just price.

  9. I bought the Oxford Mondial jacket earlier in the year and it's been severely tested in very wet rain a few times and has kept perfectly dry inside. For the money, £250, it's a bargain for a laminated jacket.

  10. Side thought. Didn’t you say it started at cuffs? Is it like a leak: once you find a weakness, it just spreads.

  11. I think the first time I took it out in the wet, I got wet cuffs but it was otherwise OK. Lately wetness starts at upper forearm, elbow area. Went to BMW dealer yesterday and had a moan and they said they'd call me back. Not holding my breath or anything. Have carefully washed it and am going to Nikwax it (Spray on so as not to fook with c-change membrane) and give that a try.

  12. Any zips or studs around that area?

  13. Nope

  14. My Klim Gore tex suit has inner cuffs with thumb loops for cold weather riding. If water runs down the arm, into the glove it can creep up your arm if your wearing a long sleeve base later.
Got wet forearms once and took a while to suss why my forearms were soaked by inside sleeve of jacket only damp.

  15. I've been doing some research and it seems there's a ton of stories like mine. If within warranty period BMW would replace with no question but I'm way outside that. There are stories of peoples 2nd and 3rd suits leaking too though. And some just seem to work fine and have no problems...Seems like the DWR coating may not have been applied correctly to a lot of suits...

  16. If it was just the DWR that was the problem, you'd not get wet, just the outer layer would wet out far quicker and it would get heavy and cold. If you're getting wet, it's either an issue with the membrane or water getting in somewhere.
