1200 Pikes Peak Heated Grips

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Clarkey63, Aug 28, 2019.

  1. hi all I brought a 2013 PP multistrada this year I want to fit heated grips I'm off to Wales in October for along weekend OE grips are friggin expensive I'm happy to pay the price but ,how easy to fit, how do you adjust the temperature or are there any grips out there that you can retro fit with the ability to adjust the temperature all info greatly received
    Thanks

  2. Not difficult, time consuming as the connectors are buried under the front of the fuel tank. They will also need to be enabled by a dealer to use the starter button to turn them on, cycle through 3 intensity settings and off. IMO, hard wire a set if Oxford grips to the battery. The Oxford grips come with a handlebar mounted controller which has about 7 or 8 intensity settings. Andy

  3. The only thing I’d say in this is that the OE heated grips are seamlessly integrated into the bike and almost invisible. Oxford grips a clunky in comparison to say the least.

  4. Oxford grips can be wired direct to existing wiring and use the starter button as control. is your bike fitted standard with heated grips?

  5. OEM heated grips may look tidy, but they are no way as good as Oxford grip regarding heat.
I had Ducati OEM fitted at the dealer from new, now on the second set in in 31/2 years. Now it’s all out of warranty the next ones will be the Oxford which I’ve had on previous bikes.

No they are not fitted as standard

  7. Look in your manual. When the grips are fitted an enabled you use the starter press button when the bike is running to alter the heated grip setting (heated grips are disabled when engine not running to protect battery charge).
Each press will cycle through Off -> Max -> Mid -> Low

You can wire the oxford grips to the OE connectors and control them as if they are factory ones. Snells fitted after market grips to my mates bike from new as he likes his grips hot and uses them a lot. Maybe ask them, they will know what to do and who I am talking about ;)

  8. Well feck me....I've been meaning to post a question on why the heated grip button is so far away from the right grip that I was up reaching over with my left hand to operate the damn thing rather than roll off the throttle.....shows I should read more of the manual to realise I can use the starter button when on the move. That's made my day.....I know...I'm easily pleased.

Already spoke to snells getting grips fitted in a couple of weeks didn’t want to do it my self in case things go wrong there work will be warranted
    Happy days

  10. If the oxford ones are wired into the OE heated grips, does that mean it'll still only be max, mid and low? And are they as likely to die as the OE ones if fitted this way?

  11. yes you will only have three heat settings, they should last just as long as Oxford say they will. The ducati versions are very expensive for what they are.

  12. One of my Ducati ones stopped working in January 2018, four months after I bought the bike (used). About time I got it replaced :-D

  13. Still using the stock grips. They are good for cool temps but not cold. Thanks for the tip on the starter button. I've also been using my right hand on the left grip to actuate the heat.

  14. Just to clarify here, the use of the starter button for heated grips is pre-DVT bikes. When they redesigned the switch gear and made it backlit, a dedicated heated grip switch was added. I've not tried it but would assume if you have a dedicated switch then the functionality through the starter button no longer works.

Clarkey, great to hear you have it in hand (pun intended ;) )

I'm getting grips fitted in 2 weeks time so will be interesting how Snells fit them so I can adjust temperature hopefully it will be through the starter button will keep you all informed

  16. I am changing the bars on my 2017 1200s dvt which has heated grips.
    Need them a bit narrower.
Would anyone know how to get the left grip off, without damaging it.
The rest of it is fairly straightforwards, all allen keys, any advice gratefully received.

  17. I take a small diameter Philips screwdriver inserting gently under the grip. When in a couple inches squirt a little silicone lube with straw. Push screwdriver almost to inside of grip and apply more lube, then walk screwdriver around the circumference. You may need to squirt more lube if it's tight. It will slide off.

  18. that sounds easy enough, i guess it will just stay on the new bars or do you stick it on

  19. I've had a good look at the grips and there's two very small philips screws under the rubber outer grip.
Take these out and the whole thing slides off.
I'm glad I didn't start sliding things up under the grip as the heating elements are there.

  20. I know when I have replaced grips, I've tended to use hairspray. Sounds weird but when wet it allows the grips to be slid on but as it dries it turns into an adhesive
