Went for a spin today after doing the chores for the family. Good weather, dry roads and time to get some decent miles done. Couple of times whilst accelerating in 2nd the revs would rise and she wouldn't go any faster, tried a couple of times and it seemed to happen at 8000 revs. Got stuck in some road works and then it happened in 3rd gear same revs. Got home ok but I think I have to spend a few penny's and get a new clutch, to finish the wonderful day of went to put the bike away and she would not start at all, just clicking not turning over....now well and miffed.
Yeah that does sound like clutch slip to me, not sure why she wouldnt start thou. Hope its not too bad
If youve been out for a good ride and then got home and stop the bike. If its now clicking then it sounds like it is not charging faulty rectifier which could also be the cause of the revs being limited What bike is it
Hi its a 749 05 model, 16k on the clocks used regularly and always on the optimate when out away. When I turned the ignition on all the readings on the display were fine, pressed the starter and it just clicked, tried several times and only once it caught on the starter motor, the rest of the time nothing, gutted.
Charge the battery and give it a go. If it fires up check the charging and see what you've got. You need around 14V with a few rev's on. If you've not got a voltmeter put the headlamp against a wall and see if they get brighter when you blip the throttle. Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs!
No worries, any advice is good advice, I will try the voltmeter in the morning. Sometimes when things go wrong you get brain freeze
Re: not going above 8k r.p.m This could be the symptom of a dirty fuel filter, when was the last time it was changed? A dirty/blocked fuel filter can also cause the fuel pump to draw excessive current in it's effort to supply sufficient fuel for the engines demands leading to electrical problems. I would also check the battery connections, are they clean and tight? They might seem o.k with a quick visual inspection, but it's worth undoing them and cleaning and reassembling
Hi, she will rev past 8k no issues just noted that when in 2nd gear and hitting the 8k mark the revs would increase and the bike did not seem to go faster for a few seconds then it would get going again, short shifting up to 3rd seemed to cure the problem. Mind you think it's still the original clutch so about time it needed replacing.
Yup - that sounds like clutch. You may get away with a plate shuffle short term. Not too disastrous mate, new set of plates and yr off!
defo battery as mine did the same and its a 999s ,it souds like its going to start but just does not get there, you have to remember it needs a lot of power to start ,its not just running the starter motor its the injectors and the cpu and that takes a lot of juice
Before doing anything else to the clutch, remove the clutch slave cylinder and pull out the actuating rod - they're notorious for getting 'sticky' with a build up of claggy clutch powder, giving you inconsistent engagement. Non starting is unrelated and as others have said, most likely a duff post-winter battery
Battery been on optimate all night, tried to start this morning and nothing, all the info is displayed on the display, lights and indicators work, pressing the start button nothing at all. Fuel pump is priming ok, checked and cleaned battery connectors and fuses all ok. New battery it is then
I have just had to buy a new battery this week. The bike is always on an optimate while in the garage but when it gets old enough even an optimate wont save it. 7 years is pretty good though for the original battery.
