New Lawnmower Needed

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by West Cork Paul, Sep 14, 2019.

  1. I need a new lawnmower so I thought I’d ask the font of all useful (and useless) knowledge, the Forum, the question.

Is it worth €138 (39% more) extra for a Honda engine over a Brigg’s & Stratton?

The one on the left is €450 with the Honda engine, the one in the middle is €312 with the B&S engine.

Both Mountfield. Similar size cutting decks 55cm v 51cm, both self propelled.

I have to admit I’m veering to the one in the middle as a) it’s cheaper and b) it’s red.

  2. I don't think so. I have been using the same homebase cheepo with the B+S engine for the 16years we have lived in this house. its not the smallest garden in the world and was used more as a rotovator than mower for the first couple of years. park it up in October, pull it out in April. even with the old fuel left in it, give it 10 good pumps of the primer. boom, off it goes. never been serviced and I have never even bothered to dip the oil.

  7. Another for an old Briggs. Had an acre plot to mow, bought a 10 year old Briggs and my only requirements were petrol, self propelling and with a roller for tarty stripes. In the garage over the winter, fresh fuel and oil in april then off it goes again

I'd have no problem buying either of those you mentioned

  8. I’ve had my Hayter with the B&S engine for nigh on 8 years.
I change the oil and plug every year and have had no issues at all.

  9. B&S, if you were using it as a landscaper the Honda but for use at home would bother spending the extra - only had one go bang and that was due to towing a grass sweeper that was too big for mower - so my own fault

  10. ..a lamb or two..

Eventually you can get it killed (humanely) and then eat the little sods. Boys are cheaper than girls at the farmers market or visit a local farm & ask for a price.

  11. As a firm believer in a striped lawn, this is a very good question.

  19. I've heard used engine oil makes your lawn grow really well. I've also heard it kills the grass stone dead?

Can anyone confirm? I'd really like to try the used oil treatment but I don't want a poor outcome.
