748 Speedo Problems Again...

  1. So, new cable and drive unit worked for 5 mins then packed up.

    Taking the cable out at wheel end and using a drill, speedo all good. Cable all good.

    Put back into the new speedo unit and doesn't work. Bear in mind the garage installed the unit as I have no way of getting the front end up.
    Very strange, all new running gear, but fails. Pretty stumped and so is the garage?
     
  2. It's a shame you can't investigate it yourself, it would be worth looking at the drive washer that goes in the wheel, possibly the tangs could be worn, I have had this recently on my Honda.

  3. The garage said said the tangs looked fine, however I have just ordered some new ones and washer
     
  4. Let us know if this works in due course as mine/916 has stopped working a couple of weeks back.
     
  5. will do, although I'm away for a few weeks. I'm hoping its the washer/tang in the wheel, even though the garage said they looked ok. So will be putting a new everything on...even though the drive unit and cable are new

  7. bike in the garage at the mo, will let you know the outcome...my dash lights, rev tacho all failed on way to garage. Will look at that myself. Ducatis really do improve one's mechanical and electrical knowledge :sob:

  8. I've the same problem with the 916 and friend says to me everytime not that bloody bike again,,always problems............& my reply is when it's going it's just sublime:):upyeah:

  9. If it was me, after doing that, I'd try the other way round: disconnect cable at speedo. With bike on front paddock stand (front wheel off the ground), does the cable freely rotate when the wheel is rotated? Hold the square at the top of the cable between your fingers. Can you hold it still if you want to when the wheel is rotated, or is it forced to rotate? (in other words, is the gearbox driving it?) If it rotates smoothly, all good, but I suspect the speedo gearbox is incorrectly located.

  10. I did try that and rotated perfectly. I even put a matchstick in the drive and rotated wheel and watched it rotate, getting quicker when spinning the wheel and v' versa. I'm hoping its a duff drive, replaced with another new one, will find out in a few days
     
  11. In which case you would have thought the drive gearbox was OK. If you take the gearbox off, and rotate the tang with your finger, does it feel smooth and rotate freely, and can you see the 'square' also turning OK?
     
  12. The new drive I have is smooth with resistance, the other new one which was put on felt a bit loose, no resistance. Hoping that's the problem

  13. OK, I think you've out your finger on it now! o_O They should feel nice and smooth to rotate.
     
  14. Problem was the tangs. Looked absolutely fine, not worn, but new tangs in, works a treat. Hardly noticeable using a digital calliper, that's the fine line between things working and not on these bikes.

  16. Just got bike back from garage, First time checking the dead electrics on dash cluster...checked fuse #6, blown. Replace fuse, all good. Why it's blown I don't know, if it happens again will investigate further. For now all good. Thanks for all you input, much appreciated.

  17. I lost the speedo cluster light on my ST4 a few years ago (similar dash to yours) was a pig to get the lamp out that wasn't shown on the circuit diagram but just a standard lamp if you have one go :upyeah:
