Hi all, Well my rebound damping isn't damping at all and I'm looking at replacing the forks with a decent set of 2nd hand ones until I decide what to do with the naff ones. A question I'm sure has been asked before, yet cant find an answer using the search on here: Can the oe ohlins forks from the S model be made to fit the base? I'm sure they'll physically fit but wasn't sure whether the electronic connections needed to control them exist redundantly on the base model. There seems to be quite a few ohlins oe forks that I can find but not many decent or reasonably priced mazzochis. I did buy a set of second hand mazzochis that have been fettled with by MCT from a chap on ebay but he's now refusing to send them (long story!) so I'm kind of stuck with a bike that's interesting/terrifying to ride at the moment with its total lack of rebound control, until I resolve this. Thanks in advance Chris
I could, but I'd be looking circa £1k which I'd rather not spend on the standard mazzochi tbh and for £600 ish extra I could get a set of off the shelf ohlins!
I've been in talks with Paul at Race Labs looking at options but I guess a second opinion wont hurt. Much appreciated
uprated internals are far better than off the shelf ohlins mate. plus aren't the ohlins electronic on the 1199??
Indeed, hence my question. If the loom on the base model is the same as the S, it may have the connections available to connect the S model forks (or it may not) and if it does, can they simply be connected or does it then require a speedo module from an S also. When I mean off the shelf ohlins, I mean the direct from ohlins, manual adjustment type which would be far superior to the OE ohlins fitted to the S model and also a revalved or recartridged mazzochi fork. If money wasnt a constraining factor fitting non standard ohlins is what I'd do, but I'm trying to get my bike back on the road without spending a million by dropping in a set of second hand forks until I can chuck some pennies at something decent....something I cant currently afford to do
Because its circa £250 to service the forks and the likely outcome will be "you need new internals mate" I've had a chat with the guy who set my suspension up (paul @ Race Labs) and he has said a service would identify the issue but unlikely to resolve it so while he'll happily take my money he believes it's an expensive way to prove what we're 99% sure is the issue. And as he's seen this before in the panigale mazzochi forks along with the endless reading and phoning around I've done....I'm inclined to believe him. So the plan is to drop in some decent working forks, then the old forks can be stripped at my leisure without the issue of either having to pay extra pennies to have new bits put in or put the forks back together as is and be £250 out of pocket. Just trying to do this as economically as possible without unnessecary money wastage. Replies are all much appreciated
The stock forks have pressurised bladders in them as part of the damping unit. They've failed. End of. New forks aren't silly money from Ducati (about £380 a leg) but there's a chance it'd happen again, although if dealer fitted you get a 2 years warranty. You could replace the cartridges with aftermarket, Ktech or Mupo and the fork would work well. The forks them selves aren't that bad and they are light. Electric Ohlins won't work. The loom is different as is the dash and you'd need the Ohlins ecu. You could source R forks but they'd be a premium.
The base model Mazzochi suspension is pretty terrible, I would be doing my best to get that changed to something else. Mupo or KTech cartridges, etc. I think you might need to get either a different upper or lower yoke but I forget which way around? (maybe that's just the 899?) One thing I would say is that whilst the stock S Ohlins are generally considered not as good as the aftermarket stuff there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it's very high quality. I used it for three years hard track riding on my 1199S and it never let me down. Unless I had a couple of grand to spend on new stuff I would even keep it on there for racing. I have a brand new set of R forks but they would be £1100.
Lovely, thanks for that and kind of makes sense why I've not seen any base models with the oe S model ohlins! Internals would be ideal but its upward of a grand to supply and fit, money I don't currently have available but would be what I'd likely look to do once I've removed my naff forks, but first I need a decent set of 2nd hand replacements....clearly not the oe ohlins ones now! Many thanks for all replies, and back to scanning ads for forks :/
I have a very good relationship with Dave Croft at Mupo since I run their gear on my race bike. I'll ask him if he has anything second hand or clearance available.
If I had the pennies right now, I'd snap your arm off for a set of the R forks! Currently reclaiming money back through PayPal on the forks I bought but the seller refused to send
I have a ktech 1199 shock for sale that far outweighs the crap you have on there already and the standard forks are good until the bladder goes then they are shite... to put it bluntly
Just an option I'm looking at these: ANDREANI FORK PISTONS KIT DUCATI 1199 PANIGALE Ebay item 273659841941 These, as far as I can make out, replace just the rebound valve. Any one used these? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
