1200 R Monster 1200r Incoming - Help & Advice Needed

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Richard Oldfield, Oct 13, 2019.

  1. I've bought a 2016 Monster 1200R, 1204 miles, which I'm looking forward to being delivered next week.
The bike is standard other than a tail tidy & a tank pad. The first additions will be EvoTech radiator guards & axle sliders.
    I've a few questions on other additions;

Throttle Spacer Kit - has anyone had the need to fit one or fitted one?

Exhaust - Come spring I'll want to change the standard cans. Termi's seem the obvious choice but pricy with the full up map kit.
Has anyone found a cheap source? If I find a reasonably priced system is there any issue taking the bike to a dealer for up loading?
What about other systems - anyone using an Arrow or Akra? (I'm not looking for a loud pipe)

Grips - 1200R in local dealer had some nice soft grips fitted. The dealer said they were 'Speciale Grips' but I can't find them with that name. In a thread on here Flatsticks 1200R looked to have the same grips. They also look like ProGrips but not sure which model.

Other parts - is there a good source for DP parts at discounted prices? I'd like to fit LED indicators & DP levers in the future.

  2. You will love the bike, had my 1200R for 2 years now and done 11500 miles and the only thing to go wrong has been a blown headlight bulb. I fitted the throttle spacer, and think it makes a big difference. Very easy to fit. I had Termis fitted to the bike from new, never even heard it on standard pipes. Also got Evo Tech rad guards and tail tidy fitted.

  3. I've fitted the throttle spacer and it made it much easier for throttle on/off at low speed like mini roundabouts.

I got the terms and up map from dealer which greatly improves the low speed fuelling. So much cleaner. I believe you will only get the upmap from a main dealer as they replace the standard one (and give it you on a separate chip.

I believe you'll only get DP parts from a dealer also.

  4. Thanks - mines black too!
What bar end mirrors have you fitted?
Have you polished the exhaust? How/with what?

  5. Black is best.
Just cheap ones off Ebay, I've got different ones on now.
Polished the exhaust with Harpic Max Power and then Auto Glym metal polish.

  6. Yes to the throttle spacers, well worth it, makes the transition from closed throttle to opening much smoother

Arrow exhaust, paid about £450 delivered, runs beautifully, no remapping required. Also got the Evotech hanger kit

I’ve fitted Grip Puppies, about £14 from eBay, over my stock grips, was getting a couple of numb fingers, these are very comfy

As for other bits, shop around. I nabbed a set of folding Evotech brake and clutch levers off here for £55, absolutely mint

Exhaust polished with a polishing wheel/soap kit then buffed up using Autosol. CNC billet bar end mirrors from eBay

  7. Thanks Monsterped - yes I've seen the Arrow, £401 on ebay at the moment. £1100 cheaper than the Termi!!
Did it come with the mounting strap?

  8. Just traded my 1200R in on a V4S. Loved the Monster!
I never felt the need for installing throttle spaces on the Monster. Best mod was an Anitori Quickshifter, really woke the bike up.

  9. @Richard Oldfield Awesome bike, Congrats.

For me, the best performance mods in order of importance were:
    Short Levers
    Throttle Spacers
SC Project Carbon Conic Slip-On Exhaust w/ Rexxer ECU Flash

    For protection:
    Evotech Performance Radiator Guard
    DP Tank Protector

IMHO, stock grips are fine. Axle sliders add un-sprung weight and you have to remove it when you use your rear stand.
For the little protection offered, I would rather spend the money to reduce my insurance policy's deductible/ co-insurance.

If you don't have them, Front and Rear stands are invaluable for servicing and winter storage. Other tools of importance include a 55mm-12 pts "steel" socket tool, eccentric spanner and a torx male socket bit set for chain adjustment assuming you don't already have some or all of these.

  10. yep mounting band included, check that price includes the link pipe though

  11. Really love my 1200R, its a fantastic bike to ride and i am sure you will love it , as for a pipe ,i fitted a SC project conical pipe, stunning quality and sounds fantastic ,(you really need to run it without the baffle to get the full benefit ) Evotech tail tidy and rad and oil cooler guards ,and Ducati tank pad ,never had a problem going from closed to open throttle apart from keeping the front down :)

  12. The Monster 1200 "R" is also outgoing as it does not seem to be available for 2020.
It's no longer on Ducati's website.

  13. Does anybody know the bar internal diameter so I can order some bar end mirrors?

  14. Without answering that question specifically, I know first hand that the Rizoma mirrors fit the Monster having installed a pair. Hope this helps a bit.

  15. Thanks, I was considering an ebay pair that states fitment as 7/8" or 22mm - I just wanted it confirming before I ordered.

  16. Forgot to say that when the bike goes in for its service i am going to get the suspension set up for me ,which i think will make quite a difference.

  17. Bar end mirror users, where did you get your mirror blanking screws? Is one left hand thread? What size?

  18. I had to go back to my 2017 ebay emails orders to find you this (see attached). You do realize how much work that was? If I ever make it to the UK, I expect a pint. ;)
Here's my order for the left hand thread. I asked the seller for the same M8-16mm in a right hand thread. I had to use a couple of SS lock washers to pick-up the slack. It cost me another $1.68. I had to take out a second mortgage for this purchase. :scream:

  20. The bike arrived on Friday - thanks to Greenham Kawasaki, Newbury for the deal & delivery.

I've fitted bar-end mirrors, throttle spacer kit, Evo-Tech rad, oil cooler & engine guards, a comfort seat, & a front axle slider.
Future plans include LED indicators TWM Folding Levers & an end can.
The chain needs tensioning. Can anyone let me have a link to the torque like adaptor I need to undo the eccentric axle pinch bolt? And a wheel nut tool?
Whats the torque for the pinch bolt on the rear axle? 55Nm on my Speed Triple R
The bikes not DataTagged - is it worth getting?
Can you tell what this plug is for? Ducati battery charge (did come with one)
Can i disconnect it from the battery & fit my Optimate 4 lead?
