748 748 R Oil & Filter Change.

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Paul55, Nov 6, 2019.

  1. Going to attempt this at home on Saturday before Portimao week after next. I have a new filter and some decent oil. Apart from warming her up first, anything else I need to be aware of?

  2. Not wrecking the filter

  3. ^What he said.
The filter is recessed and (if tight) can be an arse to get out.
I've found one of those cup jobbies best.

  4. when you say warming up....

why not let the oil drain out overnight...pull the drain plug and oil filter you could even remove the oil cooler pipes to let the old oil from there.

  5. Don't over tighten oil filter.

  6. Be aware that something will go wrong and something will break.

  7. Hmmm.... at risk of really being put off, what is the re-start procedure after filling?

  8. aint there an oil screen as well that needs removing and cleaning?

  10. I'd get a filter with a nut on it so it's easier next time to remove.

  11. whats wrong with hammering a screw driver through it?

  13. Fill the filter with fresh oil prior to installation.
    Then fill to line.
    Then run it.
Then check it again after it has settled and top up to lower line.

  14. If you are using the bike just on track id fill to the bottom line not the top....saves a bit of oil for more frequent changes, less weight, less stuff glancing around,.. and same as the race bikes that use a lower oil glass.

  15. Don't overfill the oil, as mentioned run, settle, top up to lower line and so on. I normally run the bike first, let the oil cool a bit so it has more fluidity when cold and leave to drain overnight.

I always put the filter on as tight as I can with two dry hands, and a jubilee clip round it and give it the smallest of tap...then just tap the jubilee clip to get it off on your next oil change. The Original Ducati Filter is prone to seizing on a bit, I use Hi-Flo, has more flat base. Personal choice. Never had one stuck in 15 years.

Remember to replace your oil drain plugs crush washer, cost pennies, with each change and don't overtighten. Once you done it once, you will wonder why you never did it before. Trust me, you will smash it.

  16. You can leave the jubilee clip on, butt the worm part up to the engine. This will stop the filter rotating off.

  17. I thought there might be more to this than immediately obvious. Many thanks to you all.

  18. I wonder of you ask these kind of questions, if you’re equipped enough to start the job....
