1198 Ducati Performance Mirrors

  1. Just fitted some mirrors, still rubbish at seeing what's behind you but look a lot better than the standard ones, one problem, they flash too quickly compared to the standard mirrors. Anyone else fitted these mirrors & had the same problem, if so, how did you fix it?

  2. If they are LED you may need to fit a resistor.
     
  3. Fitted them a few years ago now to an 848. Sorry, dodgy memory but isn’t there a setting in the dash for swapping to led?

  4. My 848 is a 62 plate it doesn’t have the setting in the dash to select it (hold the left hand side selection switch down when you turn the ignition on) I had to fit resistors to the LED indicators I hid in the tail unit behind the vents
     
  5. Hi I see I got tagged bby @bettes

    Pretty sure miine (early 1098S) didn't have a dash option & it behaved very strangely. I already had LEDs on the rear and ended up with a fast flash rate when the ignition was turned on, but bizzarely slowed down to a normal rate when the engine was running.

    Resistors did nothing to alter this situation.

    Then for no reason after a few weeks the flash rate went to normal all the time. I know that sounds impossible but that's what happened. There was also another forum member who experienced equallly wierd behavour with his 848

    Not much use I'm afraid, it drove me nuts trying to figure it out and to this day I'm no wiser

    @Cream_Revenge the original indicators were LED, they just had more LEDs in the mirror which is why I believe these indicators are flashing faster as there is less resistance in the circuit. Thanks for the resistor link.
    @Old Jock I never ran the engine when trying the indicators, I will later when I get home & report back. Maybe there is a self learn system in the indicator circuit which explains how yours sorted it's self. I also find it hard to believe (yes I am that naive) that an official Ducati part wouldn't come with resistors or similar to work correctly when fitted.
     
  7. I think the other guy who had similar oddities was arthurbikemad but I cannot see him in the list anymore

    @Andy 1198 I believe the canbus is the culprit at large but the how is a mystery. Heard reports of wrong polarity LED sidelights also suddenly self rectifying too

    Defo try a start. My MOT tester when he switched on the ignition looked at me with the "You do know that's a fail" look and I said start it, when he saw the flash rate slow to normal he just ticked the box stating the lights were all good

    The indicators started to work at a correct speed but then sped up to quicker than the standard indicators but slower than when the engine wasn't running. hmmmmmm

    What happened with my 1098 was I already had Kellerman LEDs on the rear and then purchased the DP Performance mirrors for the front.

    Originally after installing and switching on the ignition I got a fast flash rate.

    When I then started the engine the flash rate immediatley went to the normal slower flash rate.

    If the engine was stopped and the ignition still on the flash rate became high again.

    After a while the flash rate was normal all the time. I know that all sounds crazy but it's what happened and I can offer no explanation as to why either.

    When I had the fast rate I installed resistors, I cannot remember the value I think around 20 Ohms, no difference whatsoever to the flash rate, so I removed them.

    As of now I'm not sure as the bike has hardly run this summer.

    All I can tell you is that when the engine was running the flash rate has always been normal.

    The flash rate is goverened by the dash and what's going on inside there I have no clue (no info I'm aware of). I'm far from an electrical wizard but I'm not totally clueless when it comes to electical work and basic electronics. Starting the engine AFAIK should make no difference except a small change to the system voltage (and possibly a very small AC ripple component that would not be noticeable).

    Why do you say hmmmmm, because it sounds so improbable? I can't blame you for being sceptical.

    If you want I'll go out tommorow try it and report back. I'll even video it if I have the fast rate with the ignition on and the engine not running then start the engine to show you the rate changing.

    If it was me I'd just try to start the bike to check it that's all.

    I'm going to measure the resistance across the std mirror & the new ones, they appear to have a similar number of LEDs in the mirrors, so I don't expect there to be much difference.
    Next step is to disconnect the battery & see if connecting the battery with the new mirrors tricks the ECM/dash into accepting the new mirrors.
     
  11. Good luck with it @Andy 1198 , in my case unfortunately killing the electrics had no effect, I remove the battery every Winter.

    Again (& I've no explanation) resistors made no difference in my case. My total guess is that the CanBus signal that's piggybacked onto the DC has something to do with it but I'm clueless as to what is going on inside the dash. If it is something related to the CanBus then it might expain why resistors made no difference in my case, as whatever is causing the flash rate to alter is related to reactance not resistance. I'm doing no more than guessing though.

    Be interesting to see if you fair better, hope you do, if you want to see what I get on mine, I'll video it to let you see.
