Hidden Speed Cameras

  1. Another "loophole" being used by the police...
Speed cameras are supposed to be clearly visible - how can they act as a deterrent if they aren't visible ? (call me cynical...)
BUT - if they are "speed on green" cameras there is a loophole. As the stated primary function of these cameras is Red Light Camera ("RLC") used to catch drivers jumping red lights and they only switch to being speed cameras when the lights are green, they are allowed to be hidden/camouflaged... Sneaky...
These are the ones in Devon - not sure if they are using the same loophole elsewhere.

  2. We have one on a main duel carriageway here in south Manchester.
They reduced the speed limit from 40 to 30 and at the same time installed one of these delightful machines with no prior warning.
It’s caught out thousands of unsuspecting tax paying road users to date!

  3. Bar-stewards...

  4. I have always assumed red light camera are speed as well

  5. Why would anyone be speeding through an intersection? Isn't there a school crossing they could be racing around on?

  6. Hard to see em when I go through on the back wheel

  7. Had them at major junctions in London for a couple of years, if you can't see something like that you deserve the points.

  8. Of course you should have them as speed on green. They are timed amber to red based on the road speed limit.
We've got loads around Heathrow and I think they should have them on all the traffic light junctions around here.
Drivers around here think it's acceptable to drive through red lights and speed through junctions. Every day I see people collecting flashes and points.. makes me smile.
It's the 20mph limits where less than a year ago it was a national speed limit changes that get my goat.

  10. I pull away on a green light, at least twice since I've been back from holiday I've had to slam the brakes on as a car (always a car, never a bike) zooms across in front of me.
Note I drive a heavy van, so it's not quick off the lights. If I was on my bike I'd be done for. I always take observation, hence the lack of collision; it's like these loons have a death wish.... never a copper around when you need one.

And don't get me wrong I bitch when I get done for 63 on a Dual carriage way, with no breakdown lane under the bridge.... damn safety partnership....

  11. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that people should be speeding through junctions...
But this goes back to the same old argument - are cameras there to slow down the traffic by acting as a deterrent? Or are they there to generate as much revenue as possible by fining as many people as possible ? If the cameras are hidden and / or camouflaged it would, surely, imply the later... ?

  12. For a junction with traffic lights you shouldn't need a speeding deterrent! I'm completely in agreement with Aircon about behaviour at red lights.

  14. All the junction cameras i have seen are all painted the same colour bright yellow and clearly visible. If you get caught by one of those you deserve the punishment. Agreed with others, it is normal to take extra a care at junctions for your very survival . So they do not seem to just be cash generators to me.
