Icon Have You Done 10k Miles On Your Scrambler Yet?

  1. I've just on 9K on my Classic and to be honest I haven't looked at the retaining plate. I'll check during the winter lay up.
I usually change them every time I change the chain and I'd normally expect it to last at least to 15K. I have a spare ready if I need it.

  2. Hi Derek, when you’ve changed them previously have you ever found one to be excessively worn?, I took the front sprocket off my 900ss about 6 months ago, I don’t know how many miles the retainer plate has done in total but at least 3k miles with me, it looked fine, that said I wasn’t looking at it closely for wear as I was completely unaware of this issue at the time, I’ll have another look this weekend for peace of mind, btw if you’re doing many more miles before your winter lay up I’d check the plate on yours now.

  3. Yes Mark, I had one on an ST4s that wore the spines right off, just like the one on your Scrambler. It had been on for at least one chain so probably 20 odd thousand miles. On the previous 900ss I changed a chain at 15k and the retainer showed wear but lasted until the next chain about 30K when it was replaced. Since the incident with the ST4s I've been more careful about them but would usually expect them to last well over 10K.
The Scrambler is already laid up since the end of Oct. The weather is crap up here now with icy mornings and loads of salt on the roads, I obviously wasn't going to get out much so sorned all my bikes. Probably not on the road again until March now :(

  4. What a ridiculous design the retainer plate is, I wish I’d chanced across a thread on it over the last few years so that I’d have known to check it, but at least it’s a relatively cheap fix, Ive got a DID gold VX3 chain for £47 and the retainer plate for less than £8 inc postage, the damage on the swing arm is minor and not in a very noticeable place so I’ll just run a bit of paint into it, the damage on the foot peg bracket can’t be seen with the sprocket cover on so again just a dab of paint to stop corrosion, yes the weather has been rubbish just recently, never known it rain so much, we haven’t got salt yet but it won’t be long!.

  6. That sounds very cheap for one of those chains.
    Are you sure it's genuine?
I was told there are a lot of counterfeit DID chains about...

  7. Yes, I thought the same old rider, but I’ve checked it over and compared it to the old one, it’s genuine, if not it’s an absolutely perfect copy including the packaging, the eBay seller is Bikeaholics , I’ve bought from them before and always received good parts, the average price on eBay was over £60 so as you I was a little suspicious.

  8. Old rider, please could you do me a favour , open the link above and tell me if it just takes you to the eBay add without showing my address in the order details, when I open the link I can see my name and address which obviously I don’t want to broadcast on a forum.

  9. Relax Mark. It's because you are logged into eBay on your computer. For the rest of it just shows the chain. :)

  10. Thanks Derek, I thought that would be the case but you can’t be too sure! :)

  11. Can confirm Derek is correct - as always... ;)

  12. I wish that was the case Jeremy, but like most people I sometimes get things wrong.

  15. If that's the fixed one Mark, I'd hate to see the unfixed one:eek:

  16. Ha, yes doesn’t look any better than the old one really does it!

  17. Has anyone else checked their retainer plates yet?, if so what was it’s condition/miles

  18. Has anyone checked the retainer plates on their scrambler yet? :)

  19. I must confess; I meant to check mine during the winter after your warning but I forgot.
So I had a look at it this morning and it's fine with just perceptible wear. It should easily last until the chain is worn out. The mileage is about 9,500. And I'm happy to say that the sprocket is in good nick too, no hooking of the teeth at all.
You must have got a duffer Mark.
