Yeah I know, well out of date but I have an old but rather good PC in need of more RAM.... Currently has 4 x 2Gb PC2-6400 dimms (mobo can take up to PC2-8500) ...but I want to upgrade to 16Gb i.e. 4 x 4Gb dimms (I don't think 8Gb DDR2 dimms ever existed). I can get generic DDR2 but after branded decent quality. Thnx
I’m on leave at the moment but if you can wait until I’m back at work next week I’ll see what I can find. We might have some servers from that era that are ready to be sent to recycling. I’m pretty sure that 4gb DIMMs were very expensive at the time so I tended to spec 2gb more often but I have a recollection of a few blades with 32gb ram that had 8x4gb DIMMs. I’ll get back to you.
The following website will run a test on your pc and will tell you what RAM upgrades are possible and what the costs will be https://uk.crucial.com/ Hope that helps
Thanks guys El Toro.....I know what my mobo will take, DDR2 no longer available from manufacturers but thnx LiveFast....appreciated, thanks - but server ram is often a different standard (fbdimm) which does not fit standard DDR2 dimm slots and even if it is standard desktop pc type dimms probably ECC rather than non-ECC that I'm after. Bridgland - thanks
Fbdimm’s were a relatively short lived technology. I checked on an old server delivery spec and I have lots of the following - Dell G548K DIMM 4GB 667mhz PC2-5300 240-Pin ECC Registered CL5 2RX4 DDR2 A slightly slower clock speed but doubling the RAM would offset that by far if you are reaching the limits at the moment. Yes they are ECC but in most cases they will work fine in a Desktop - check your motherboard and BIOS revision - the ECC element is simply disabled if the system doesn’t support it. You’re welcome to some for the cost of postage. Ps. On an old system like that the best upgrade in terms of bang for your buck would be an SSD for the boot volume.
Thanks for the info and offer, appreciated.....if some PC2-6400 doesn't turn up I'll give you a shout. SSD.....yes!....done that on my PC and laptop a while back, great as you say Despite its age my PC is no slouch but with larger and larger photo file sizes and some files such as large PDF docs I feel the additional RAM would be good. Win10 Pro Desktop PC / OS on SSD / 1Tb 'data' HDD / Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 Mobo / AMD Phenom II X6 1100T CPU / 2Gb GDDR5 graphics 4 x 2Gb Corsair PC2-6400 800Mhz (400 MHz) CM2X2048-6400C5
No problem I have 128gb of it sat in an old beast of a server and it will have to go to the recycling company at some point so it’s better that someone get use out of it! That’s the problem with big old rack mounts - quad physical processors - massive expansion capabilities but once they reach end of life businesses don’t want them and the noise and electricity bill makes them impractical for home use! Unless you want to use them as an electric fan heater as well! That motherboard/processor combination should support ECC if you wanted to use it. The next generation are ddr3 so no good to you but I have a whole bunch of them going end of life very soon - at 192gb of ram per server - It’s a shame I only use laptops and iPads these days! You could always upgrade your motherboard to one of these https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/113979964023 up to 64gb ddr3 Ram and usb 3.1.......
Thanks for looking Bridgland Thanks Borgo...nothing on ebay that meets specs / quality / quantity.......and not being from China! Livefast......many thanks again for the advice, suggestions and offers - I'll message you Cheers everyone......turns out a better than slim chance
....you won't change your mind when you find out I ride a KTM now-a-days? lol Thread closed.....thank you everyone
