959 Decisions, Decisions!

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by LiveFast......, Dec 7, 2019.

  1. Having purchased my 959 in Jun last year I did 4 track days through July and August.

I very quickly realised that I just wanted to use it for track and as winter has set in I have been gathering the various usual upgrades and kit required to build a dedicated track weapon.

I had a week off work last week and finally got around to totting up how much I had spent on the bike already - and how much I was still to spend....! Feck! Epiphany time!

As one of the guys at work joked I was ordering a compete bike in pieces through the post I realised he was right. I was taking a perfectly good street bike - stripping off a vast number of parts and replacing them. All with the idea of being able to put it all back to standard when it comes to selling the bike.

But that whole premise relies on one thing - that I don’t bin the bike in spectacular fashion - and given the nature of track riding its kind of inevitable that the more time I spend on track.........

    So options!
    • Sell the 959 as standard and buy a dedicated race/track bike with all of the relevant bits already on it. Then sell the parts I have already bought that I don’t need.
    • Find a Cat N write off and use the parts I have bought to repair it plus whatever else it requires.
    • Continue with converting my bike and pray I don’t throw it down the road and destroy it completely!
    • Forget about running a 959 for the track and buy a cheap track bike - (insert type here)
I love the 959 - it’s a beautiful work of art and handles like a dream on track - but I know if I kept it I would hardly ever use it on the road so it’s a waste.

The biggest issue would be finding the right bike before the season starts again - and I would like to book a Spanish track trip for the spring so need to know I will have a bike for then!

Any ideas where I could find a written off 959 or ex trioptions?

  2. Mate I’d say just keep your 959 and just track it, its already taken its monetary shit. Perfect situation.
Not a waste at all, my V2 on order is going to do 600 miles on the road then it’ll never touch the road in my ownership again.
Have you got track fairings and necessary protection on ? Sorted

  3. Carry on with your 959,better the devil you know, plenty don’t crash, so put that thought to the back of your mind, 959 is a great track bike.

  4. What’s the difference between destroying your bike completely Or destroying your new track based bike completely

    Do what you’ve got :upyeah:

  5. Carry on with the 959, buy a set of track only bodywork (just in case), the end

The only other option is to get rid, sell the parts and don't ever be that silly again, you always lose money that way :D

  6. The difference as far as I can tell could be around 3k - maybe more!

By the time I have finished, converting the bike to track is going to cost me over 3k - and that’s with some good bargains on used bits.

At that point the whole bike will have cost around 13k

If could pick up an ex Trioptions bike with all of the race suspension etc on it already for less than 9k - then I would have the parts I have already purchased to sell as well as my current bike.

Alternatively a cosmetic write off could be a better option - bikes get written off all of the time for non structural damage.

A bike that’s gone down the road and assessed as cat n will usually have the following damaged:

Fairings, mirrors, bars, levers, rearsets, screen, indicators - possibly lights, front and rear subframes - possibly a dented tank and scratched up wheels / swingarm.

In short the vast majority of these things are either stripped off the bike or replaced with race oriented items so it doesn’t matter if they are damaged.

I think I would be likely to progress quicker and further if I was more relaxed on track and less concerned about the consequences of damaging the bike. I know myself and I’m very competitive - if I’m on the track I want to go fast and reduce my lap times - not just cruise around. I don’t think it’s possible to find either your own limits or the bike’s without increasing the likelihood of ending up in the gravel - or on the grass in the case of Cadwell!

And that extra 3k would pay for an awful lot of track time and tyres!

So - where can I get something that fits my requirements?? :)

  7. hahaha welcome to the world of indecision which I am a life time member, If it wasn't for that cock at work you would have been fine.

  8. What will you get for the 959 in std trim?

  9. 67 plate with 3k miles on the clock.

Not easy to gauge as the only bikes I can see on Autotrader are from dealers - I guess it’s all down to how quickly I wanted to sell. If the right bike came up that would swing it as I could do the maths then.

  10. Don't other. The sale process isn't worth the stress.

  11. So if this one is about right at £9K, what could you get for yours privately?

  12. I guess that’s in the ballpark for a realistic sale - the aftermarket exhaust on that one might put some people off and it’s slightly older and with a slightly higher mileage but I would be happy with 9k if I could get the right bike.

  13. If you smash it to bits, you’ve still chucked 10k in the pisser.

  14. I think you’d struggle to get a 959 for under 10k tbh. And you’d only sell yours for that or less. An old pal of mine Andy is selling a very good 899 but he’s still looking for over 7500

  15. They do come up - just need to find one!

  16. All actually at reasonable costs if sold at that.

  17. So you sell your current bike on price for £8200 (no trade in or financing available to your buyer), you then buy a kitted out track bike for £8000 and save the £3000k upgrade costs? But the bike might have been abused so allow a full service/ bits etc of £1000?

  18. That’s not the full picture on the most recent one! I just missed out on it and it went for a song.

Check out these links - a dealer bought it at the £7600 price with lots of spares and then sold it for £7250 without the spares. All listings are for the same bike - the first one was a full racing package even down to a folding awning!

  19. Shhhh don’t show some here what the true price of a track bike is :oops:

  20. A 959 will never be very quick but it depends how fussed you are about chasing lap times.
