Chocolate Plastics...

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Explorerboy, Dec 8, 2019.

  1. So I’ve broken a plastic tab on the seat cowl from being too cack handed. Any advice out there on how to fix it??

  2. Plastic welding?

  3. It’s broken off right in the underside of the cowl... I’m not too confident that heating it up wouldn’t affect the finish on the cowl itself.

    ducati plastics are bloody shite!

  4. Photo's?

  7. What’s the cost of a new one

  8. It's not the fault of the plastic but the design.

The triangular ribs are supposed to strengthen the clip post, but there is no break rad on them so they effectively become a fracture point themselves - just a 0.2 break rad in the corner would have strengthened it by 100% at least.

As suggested above Epoxy Resin the fracture (both sides) and stick together. Once set mix some more Epoxy and apply all around the base of the post and ribs (about a mm or two bead). Make sure it's clean prior to gluing with Isopropanol Wipes and it should repair well and be stronger than it was originally.

Be careful as its messy stuff - apply with a snapped off cocktail stick or similar. You need to be quick but neat o_O

  10. Going to sound weird as the pics aren't great and I've never had it happen.

Once the first bond has taken place with the expoxy, would cutting up a plastic tea strainer, taking off the mesh and then cutting it into strips and apply them to the fixed part as the second expoxy mix went on?

  11. A bit too delicate for that I think. Never used Q Bond but it might be easier to apply than Epoxy? @Birdie

  12. I've used Q bond with great results, well worth looking at utube clips.

  13. Cheers all! Some good stuff to go on here. Tbf, it was my hamfistedness and a crumpled up rubber bit which got my in this position.

I’ll have a look at some Q Bond and Epoxy tomorrow

  15. Sugru would fix it!

  16. I've used JB Plastic Weld to fix fairing tabs very successfully.
