Bit Of Work / Life Advice?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by JoePeps, Jan 12, 2020.

  1. I'm after a bit of impartial advice from people I don't know....!

Not sure where to take myself in life, currently 31, single and live in my own house. Been with the company I'm at for 6 years, only the MD ahead of me and run myself day to day and have a fair bit of freedom that comes with that, along with pressures. I earn very good money for the Midlands and have a decent lifestyle, albeit I'm a bit unchallenged and maybe bored currently.

However trying to work out what I want to do with the rest of my life, and I've got 4 options I think:

    1. Stay where I am, may be a possibility of buying the business out in the future and living a decent life. Upside is I don't mind the work and the people, downside is spending my whole life living in the same place.

    2. Move back to my Uncles business that I left 6 years ago, make it my own and end up with it. A really good challenge to turn it around and make it my own, same downside as above though.

    3. Take a risk and move elsewhere, London maybe. Life would be more 'difficult' as I've got a decent setup close to work etc, so would be a big change. But maybe that's what I need?

    4. Planning to go to visit my best mate in Aus this year, if I like it do I take the bigger risk of selling up and move over there.

1 & 2 are the 'safer and easier' options, so stay and 'guarantee' a good standard of living and cash coming in (hopefully) or just think fuck it and take a risk and see where it takes me?

I think I've got a lot of transferable engineering and manufacturing skills and experience so I should be able to find a decent job as opposed to working in Maccys....but who knows!

  2. London is never an answer.

    Good luck with your choice!

  3. I like the sound of 2. Maybe look to move to somewhere you'll enjoy living more; nice nearby village?

If 2 doesn't work out as you hope, go to 3/4

    Good luck!

  4. 4 then 2. F#ck London

  5. To add a bit more then:

    1. If I leave there's probably not much chance of going back, even though I will go on good terms.

    2. has to be done within the next few months really because of the age my uncle is currently and a few other factors. No chance of trying 3 or 4 and coming back to it.

    3. No ties etc

    4. No ties etc

@Kirky If I stop around here then I will move somewhere else as I'm about ready for a detached place! but not going to that expense if I end up selling to move away!

  6. I’m also engineering/manufacturing. I moved to Australia In 2006, moved back here Dec 2014. As you, I also live in the Midlands. I didn’t sell up to go there, rented out house so it was there when/if I came back
It would be great to be in the position of owning a business and being financially secure however memories and different experiences count for a lot. I see my friends/colleagues in a better financial position than me but we all lead different lives and I have some great memories
I loved my time in Australia and at first regretted coming back, however, I found the things that matter most are the things you can’t buy.
Def would not move to London, not my cup of tea.

  7. 1 or 2, probably 1. 2 could come with family complications?

Discuss doing a management buyout with your boss in a 3- 5 year earn out. Him working say 1 day a week.

Grow the business then in 5 - 10 years sell it and do what the F you want, travel, retire, slow up, keep going etc. Owning your own business is the only way to true financial independence but it does come with risks.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

  8. 3...London is a shite hole and won't get any better
4...if you are considering anywhere overseas, be aware of the age restrictions or you might just miss the boat without knowing

    leaves 1&2

2... your the right age to start again
1...My Younger brother did this, now at 52, he is an executive director and co owner of a substantially large company based in London and retirement is on the cards in 3 years. He intends to part sell his ownership share, and retire on the income from the remaining share whilst he travels the world. For now he has a very good life, life fits in with him and he spends more time on the golf course with clients than in his office

The other option is get a dice, blank off 5 and 6 and take a roll of said die. No one knows what can happen tomorrow

  11. London is a happening place and you can make very good money.
Parts of it are amazing others not so.
Housing, parking and getting around are eye wateringly expensive.
Money isn't everything, but when you are young (which you are) it's hard to see that.
A 60hr a week workaholic with no relationship / hobbies and £3M in the bank isn't as happy as a family man living in the RED... IMHO. And I've a friend like this.

What do you want out of life?
    Settle down, have kids etc..
Sounds like you need a holiday.
Have a nice long relaxing holiday in Oz... ask to take some unpaid leave if you have to... make it at least a month.

As someone said before RENT, don't sell up. That way you avoid one off costs and have the chance to move back.
You need a really good friend here to keep an eye on it.

You'll have a different prospective when you return.

I've had several of these moments in my 53 years and each time I had a long holiday to think about it.

    PS
I'm actively reducing the number of clients we work for in the centre of London.
Harrods is as far as I want to go in from the West... you can keep the City and the East End, Croydon and North London.

  14. Pack your suitcase and go, if only I was your age and the opportunity was there I would go somewhere with more outdoor play time on the menu, very different lifestyle out there, doesn’t have to be Ozz, California is nice too.....
