749 front sprocket retaining nut r.h or l.h thread?

  1. I'm trying to undo my front sprocket retaining nut on my 749, have a piece of timber wedged to stop rear wheel rotating with the bike in 1st gear but it doesn't want to move. I would appreciate confirmation that it's a r. h thread before I strain myself! I'm using a 32mm socket with an 18" wrench bar, is it possible this way or will I need a rattle gun?

  2. Hi John - think one looks like a better place than the Box Hill post....Please can you clear out some PMs as your inbox is full mate and I can't send to you. By the way can't help with the query

  3. Ken I have cleared some pm's now. This site is now so slow it's like wading through treacle, same for you?

  4. Standard RH thread.

  5. Thanks Phil

I have just realized it's tightened to 186Nm, I was only giving it a half hearted attempt as unsure what thread, now I know I will go ahead and strain myself.

  6. It's actually both RH and LH at the same time, which is why you cannot get the feckers undone.

  7. Loz
Please no further confusion, it's hard enough as it is being me!

  8. Heh, I feel your pain.
You already had the good stuff from Ghost, so I thought I'd start the goofing-off phase

My only comfort is the realization that my reality is just a construct of my brains probably incorrect interpretation of the data it's receiving!

  10. Ah, once you realise that, beer makes much more sense.
Actually, beer always makes sense. I think I shall have a beer.

  11. Had a similar problem when undoing the nut on the clutch, in the end I brought the biggest breaker bar I could find a 32mm impact socket and presto off in seconds, total cost was £37 from halfords.

  12. Kinell That nut was tight, even with a 24" snap on wrench bar I couldn't move the bugger. I had to go visit a mate and threaten it with a rattle gun. That did the job!

Now failed to fit the new link in my new chain, can't get the fishplate to go over the pins, tried squeezing it together with 2 pairs of mole grips, but the fishplate is refusing to go over the pins!

  13. I've got a chain rivet toolkit if you want to borrow it, just would have to sort getting it to you, I've used many a time and it has saved me going to a dealer etc. let me know

  14. Thanks hyabusa47 That's a very kind offer from you, much appreciated.

My original plan was to fit a clip type master link, to enable me to ride my bike to a place where they could fit a proper rivet link for me , that plan was thwarted when I couldn't get the clip type link, so I thought I would be able to manage to fit the link myself.

I will give it another go tomorrow, and see how I get on.
