  1. love this, 4 months ago in the Guardian:-

She (Miriam Lord) described the impact of the Pence visit on Ireland as “like pulling out all the stops for a much-anticipated visitor to your home and thinking it has been a great success until somebody discovers he shat on the new carpet in the spare room, the one you bought specially for him”.

“As Pence read from the autocue and Irish eyes definitely stopped smiling,” she added, “it was clear he was channeling His Master’s Voice. Trump is a fan of Brexit and of Boris.”

“Pence,” Lord continued, “is Irish American and wastes no opportunity to go misty-eyed about his love for the ‘Old Country’ as he lards on his Mother Machree schtick on both sides of the Atlantic.”

  2. I don't know if anyone watched the programes on more 4 last night, there were two. The first was with survivors, stories, photo's etc and the second programe was a group of camp survivors who escaped and then joined the allies as a special unit but then went on to form a group known as the avengers (not the comic bunch) who then sought substantial retribution by poisoning the water supplies of 6 million Germans

It didn't work, nor did the other attempts to find that retribution bar one which affected around a 100 ss officers held in their own camps whilst waiting for the nuremburg trials

It also interviewed one of the last surviving members where he explained his anger then, and now but felt some shame of the anger within him.

  3. It’s been a most humbling couple of days.

I don’t think there is education on the subject. Only yesterday did I learn that 1 million Roma were also murdered and that the word they use for their Holocaust translates to “the devouring”

  4. He's american not Irish !! And its only the dumbest fucktards in the states that pay any heed to the crap he spouts about being irish and the few diddly eii inbreads here that doff there caps to the rich American in a hope he puts another golf course in the arsehole of nowhere town !! Its cringe to watch them roll out the red carpet to these morons !

  5. He even looked right at him! Poor form no really. Pence is there representing the US, whether he’s a knob or not (which given an interview I heard he is).

Respect, and lack of it, seems to be something the world is sadly lacking. Especially at such an event.

Although would have been hilarious if Charlie offended a hand and then pulled it up to stroke his hair and walked off ;)

  6. for me, the contrary Paul - I often think of Charles as pretty spineless but if he did decide not to shake his hand on moral grounds or otherwise, then full respect from me.

  8. Not wishing to trivialise this subject in any way but a good example of how ordinary people could be motivated to do this is in the opening Colonel Hans Landa speech in Inglorious Basterds where he talks about Jews being like rats. That is what the population were told, that Jews were subhuman and not even to look at them as human beings. just something to be got rid of by whatever means possible. That is the lesson that must never be forgotten

  9. A few years ago at an international gathering in Rome, Charles was shaking the hands of a row of dignitaries. Robert Mugabe was there, offered his hand, and Charles took it inadvertently. The film of Charles shaking the hand of the murderous old crocodile went viral, and he was widely criticised for it.

Since then, Charles has been more careful about who he is seen with. Prince Andrew's recently notorious carelessness about whom he befriended has re-emphasised the point.

Politicians come and go, and Pence will soon be gone, but Charles expects to be around for decades. No doubt he has been advised that he should not touch the likes of Pence with a bargepole, since otherwise he would come to regret it in future years. Good advice.

Even respected, well-connected people like Harvey Weinstein and Jimmy Savile can later turn out to be toxic. Anyone who associated with them finds their reputation later tarnished by the connection; it would be better to have avoided them. The same applies even more strongly to someone as obviously vile as Pence.

  10. I well remember the "Mugabe" incident, memory of Blair/Al-Fayed came to mind. This was different in that Blair (and Straw) shook Al-Fayed's hand the day before "deciding he was not fit to be a British Citizen".

  11. Just for the record @Chris ,Al-Fayed has dug deeper into his own pockets than most in the oxted area,he also tried to save the mini local hospital for the surrounding folks but the council said no & built fancy houses for the toffs instead.

  12. That was meant to be a neutral post P - all about the handshake bit, but as you commented, he was a bit of a two edged sword I agree but I think his sleazy side outweighs his good side personally.

  16. interesting dilemma. I suppose it depends on whose hand we all agree we wouldn’t shake. Which surely means it’s down to personal feelings on the matter?

    who would shake Hitlers hand?

  17. ,,,but not the Windsors.;)

  19. Depends on your position and your responsibilities. I bet many politicians and other leaders shook the hand of hitler in the run up and likely early days of WW2.

would you shake the hand of Putin? How is Putin a better role model than Pence?

  20. No, especially not after Ecclestone has...
