Brought a really good condition 1098 from Ducati Croydon approx 2 months ago bike came with a full belt service and good service history & importantly 3 month parts & labour warranty Rode back to Warwickshire with a big grin on my face even in the freezing temperatures. However the dream was shattered 2 days later when the bike wont start from cold. After charging the battery it did start however the battery was quick dead agin cancelling the clock every time you went to start it. A phone call on the Monday morning saw Cristian from Ducati Croydon dispatching a battery straight to me. Once fitted bike fired up, problem solved, so i thought. Battery was left on a maintenance charger which i've used on my previous 996 and fireblade, without any trouble. However every time you tried to start her first thing she wont start pressing the starter without throttle maybe 4 - 5 times. She would crank over well enough but not fire up, unless i tried a smidgen of throttle. The service light came on so a call to Duc Croydon saw them arrange with JHP for the message to be switched off. The day was arranged and i was going to meet some friends there and once the deed was done we could go for a blast. You guess it bike wont start! After cleaning the earth connection to the casing and cleaning all connections i managed to get the her to JHP some 2 days later. John Burrows at JHP said i had the original relays and it would be good if these were changed. Phone call to Croydon and they agreed the work etc. Surely now the she would start from cold. She would crank over quick enough but on occassions she would just make a whirring noise from the starter. but give her a touch of throttle she would sometimes start but she was getting worse and my dream was falling apart. A call to Cristian at Ducati Croydon again and he said to bring the her back to for a couple of days and they would fix her. The plan was to ride down. She was not having any of it the weekend before i was going to ride down she just made whirring sounds, this time not cranking. Forums and internet searches all point to the sprag clutch but until the guys take a look who knows! Fortunately i have good mates Paul Tew, who borrowed a trailer and took us down to Croydon yesterday. She is now in the safe hands of Ducati Croydon. Now i am like an expectant father waiting for a call; Monday or Tuesday to tell me what is happening and how long it will be before i have my girl back. So far the sevice from Cristain at Ducati Croydon has been really good & long may it continue Hopefully once she is sorted the reality will live up to the dream of owning a 1098. My 996 was always reliable.
The tps being out could explain the lack of starting without throttle, and has now lead to the sprag failing from the attempts to start.
Is it an early one? There was a tech bulletin issued up to a certain VIN that called for the starter motor and gears to be replaced. Might be worth checking to see if its A, one of the affected bikes and B, if the upgrade was done.
Hi Nelly. It is a 2007 reg, so an early one Not sure if any starter motor was replaced, certainly not mentioned in the service book. Will menmtion this to Ducati Croydon. Cheers
This can be checked if your bike was affected by looking up the VOSA website and entering your VIN No to check on recalls etc.
Not sure the recall will be on VOSA. As it wasn't safety related. There are many bulletins raised that don't make it on there. Could be affected. Not bullet proof, but most using the original larger rear axle were subject to the mod. Later 07 bikes and onwards used a 2mm or so smaller rear axle and it was around this time the starter gears and motor were upgraded also. If you have no luck, drop me a pm with the last 6 numbers of your VIN and I can check for you.
I have found in the service book Metropolis m/c did the 7k service 17-3-09 and they have written on the back of the page service & recall, but have said what recall? I have not spoken to Ducati Croydon today as they said Friday it would be Monday or Tuesday before they would ring me to let me know what they have found etc. I will mention the service bulletin. Do Ducati keep records? As i only have the service stamps in the book and old Mots
Bagley......call me 01623 238944. I'm here for another hour or so else call tomorrow. I got your PM and have replied
Update Didn't ring Ducati Croydon on Monday as they has said Monday or Tuesday they would ring me. But by Tuesday 10am i had to ring and see if they had started work on my 1098. No was the reply, hopefully they would start work on her later in the day and they would phone later. No phone call recieved later that day So i stayed calm and waited until 16.45 today. Loyld the service manager said a technician was on the job now and he thought it may be the sprag clutch. They now need to drain the oil and take the casing off to have a look. So he would ring me tommorrow and let me know what they have found and how long it may be till i get my dream girl back. I suspect late next week. A positive out of the last few days is that they have started work on her and hopefully it will all work out ok.
Update Well the sprag clutch has been inspected and there is nothing wrong with it. So the search goes on. Good news is the technician is staying on it until its resolved:smile: Lets hope they find the route cause soon.
Update Spoke too Cristian at Ducati Croydon Friday afternoon and they have spoken to Ducati and have decided to replace the starter clutch. Over the last week they have; by passed the wiring, checked the starter motor and gear, checked the compression, replaced the spark plugs and numerous other activities. Hopefully the replacement will happen on Tuesday but i'll leave it until the Friday or Saturday to pick her up. Just so they can start her from cold a couple of times to prove all is well.
update. Disappointingly no phone call today. Hoping for better news tomorrow. Why do people say they will ring then don't, really annoying
Annoys me to. Megan fox still hasn't rung. That reminds me must keep texting her..... Oh that's right, the courts said I must stop.
Update The sprag clutch has been replaced and it started on the button first time, after 3 days being stood on the work bench:smile: They will fire her up tomorrow from cold in the morning but it looks really good. If all goes well tomorrow I will travel down on Friday afternoon to pick her up.
Update She is alive and firing on both cylinders:smile: Train tickets now booked. If you see a 1098 on the M25 and M40 tomorrow after 17.00 tomorrow it could be me taking my girl home:wink: give me a friendly smile and a wave. Forza Ducati
