'alloy' Rant & Moan....

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Keith_P, Feb 7, 2020.

  1. I'm ranting 'cos I've had a really bad couple of days dealing with absolute cocks at work, the wankers that I had to pop my ageing, coolant-leaking car to are completely incompetent and, lastly, I could have easily done the car work myself but I can't because some selfish bastard builder's left a skip in the way of my off-street parking access!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway - here's my rant as per the Subject.

    I'm a real pedant, a long-in-the-tooth working design/development engineer and a know a little about metals so........

Aluminium only really exists in the (mechanical) engineering world as an alloy - an Aluminium alloy - i.e. a mixture of Aluminium and alloying elements such as Copper, Silicon, Magnesium, etc which give it way, way better mechanical properties than plain or pure Aluminium. It is mostly heat treated for the best mechanical properties and this is well documented.

Steel is an alloy of mainly Iron, a little Carbon and a plethora of other elements that contribute to its well-known strength, ductility and so on. It too is often heat treated to enhance its mechanical properties.

Here's the plea: Please, please could everyone stop saying 'alloy' when you mean Aluminium alloy - just say 'Ali' or something. It's not much to ask :)

    Thanks for listening;)

  9. And another thing.

    They are tyres not tires.

Drives me nuts, especially when I’m tired and I’m tired of reading the wrong f’king spelling.

Oooh feels good to get it out.

  15. Sun's out in Brizzle (before the storm:cold_sweat:), so going to try & wiggle the Hyper out through the scaffold maze so I can take out my frustrating with the front wheel in the air!
Car's back at the shite-wank garage for them to try harder this time (prob another 2 days again...) one last chance there before I start a fight over the £200 already spent on them making it worse.
Hey ho off we go, Ali-ali-o......

  16. Now you’ve gone public with it bugging you, I’ll make sure I use alloy at the slightest chance.

  17. Aluminum is element No. 13 on the Periodic Table of Elements (Al).
It's not just found in the refrigerator wrapped around week-old leftovers. This element is the second-most abundant metallic element in Earth's crust after silicunts.

I may have changed just 1 word, just a little

  18. I usually say 'ally'....that's not alloy; ali, aluminium or aluminum......

..... you can make up your own mind what I effing mean.

It isn't hard (unless you bang your head on a brake lever when you stand up).
