I Need Some Help 1200s Or R??

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by RexDangerVest, Feb 15, 2020.

  1. I am researching a pending bike purchase.
I generally research things to death before I purchase...
    in general....
I will try to give a decent but quick overview of me...
    I do love safety...
I always covet the sportier special editions of everything...
I have never wheelied on the street... (with a street bike recently) Years ago? Dirtbikes? I was Evel Knievel.
Last bike was (What fit me) an M109. I scraped everything I could on that thing through the north GA mountains...
It wasn't what I wanted... I have since lost a lot of weight...
Now I can choose to ride anything.
I am calmer and much more mature now (56 yrs old)
But deep down inside every-time I start anything that burns gas deep inside I am still...
Ride it like you stole it
    Evel Knievel
    Speed Racer
    and
    Hot Rod Lincoln...
So, not matter what. Nothing gets bought without ABS because cagers suck.
    BUT
    Do I need...
    Wheelie control?
    Lean sensitive ABS?

    Neither on the R...
I am contemplating older machines that will not even have any kind of traction control... I am fine with that closer to 100hp. Or just no rain...
    Last thoughts.
Yeah, I cant wait to regain some, and improve other skills so that when I come out of a curve I can just lift that front wheel a little on acceleration...
Would love to be able to come around that turn with the back wheel spinning and sliding... One hand waving (just like in the pictures) but I have 3 grown kids... I think I can stop myself from trying to learn to do that...
I am not afraid... Just trying to be prudent.
    Whew thats long.
I am not worried about any other tech specs that are different between them.
When you read or watch a review, Their balls clank and shut everything off.
    What do you guys say?
    Thanks in advance to all
    Rex

  3. Yep, I wanted to love the S due to some of the additional features, but after riding both the S and R back to back, it was the R for me. No regrets....

  4. Yeah
I cannot ride them back to back...
I dont think i will miss the quick shifter...
But, i love the stripe!!!!! and the little fairing....

I have seen some R's online...
Cash lands the first week of March...

You won’t go wrong with a Monster, here’s mine, but as always go and get a test ride, the only persons opinion that matters is yours.

  7. It’s a shame you’re so far away, you could have bought my M1100S:)

Absolutely zero in the way of any electronic traction aids, or even ABS.

A proper, old school, air-cooled Ducati.

ps. Those horrible footrest hangers have gone to be replaced by some much less obtrusive rearsets:upyeah:

  8. I had similar thoughts to you regarding the S or R,i am so glad i went for the R ,stunning bike to ride, look at and hear,it stirs my soul just looking at it,and i have now had it for a year, IMG_0666.JPG

Had mine a couple of years now.... when out in the garage, still stop to look t it !

  10. Very nice :)

  11. Since you have it, I have a question.
I have seen a few of those online. What I cannot do is find one to sit on. How does your 1100 compare to a modern 797/821/1200??
I am mostly concerned with my legs being cramped. Both the 821 and 1200 fit me well
    I saw this and... mmmmm

  12. I don’t believe the ergonomics between the models has changed dramatically since the 2008 introduction of the 696. The changes over the years have been engines (and therefore power) and the addition of a variety of electronic aids. I reckon if you sat on a standard 2009 1100, a 2011 1100Evo, a 2014 1200 and a 2016 1200R all stood next to each other you’d struggle to notice any difference in riding position.

Where you will notice a difference is where someone has replaced the standard footrests with some adjustable aftermarket ones and/or changed the handlebars. Either of which you can do yourself once you’ve identified a suitable bike to get yourself a comfortable riding position. You can also change the seat for an aftermarket one to assist further.

The best thing to do, as people have said above is to test ride them and see what you think.

Keep us all posted with how you get on.

  13. I sat on an 1100 recently in a showroom , it felt more committed, more weight on the wrists, that said it was a second hand bike so could have been messed around with.

  14. Gotta go for the R. In years to come the value will go up 10 fold..... You’ll be able to sell it and buy a v10sss battery powered Panigale. You will be a riding God!!!!
    Only saying......

  15. Does make you wonder what will happen to petrol engined machines, that will depend on how they get us off them I suppose, if they put fuel up to £30 a gallon for example, can’t image run of the mill classics (ie anything other than Broughs and the like) being worth a bean!

  16. Would paying £30 a gallon/litre put you off riding a classic bike/car?
Who would think you’d be paying £20k for a 1980’s escort! Or more for a rare Ducati foggy rep.
As long as I get my smiles I’ll be paying. ( but probably much slower speeds) ;)
