Few 996 questions

  1. Ok got two flat spots (stutters) in the rev range of 996 and want to start diagnosing them but as it is second hand bike you never know if work that you were told was done was done any good.

I have a odd lack of pickup from throttle just after tick-over. Setting off is fun you have to rev it harder (not insane but not what I am used to) to get passed that and set off. However if you start setting off in the said flat spot (about 2k) bike feels rough, not firing correct and is stuck not able to rev past it till I clutch in and let revs go up a bit.

On the move there is stutter(hesitation) about 5k rpm when I open the throttle from low rpm and try to ride through it. For example on the move open handful of throttle it accelerates from 3k to 5k then stutter but slowly goes through it and then shoots off.

First thing I am thinking TPS reset and to check if injector is not stuck on.
As such how long does it take to reset TPS on 996 and what would be the cost?
How much of bike needs to come off during TPS reset? Can it also be checked easy if one of the injectors is stuck on as mentioned by member here as possible can happen on 996?

What tools do I need for chain tensioning except a special paddock stand?

  2. For the chain there should be a c spanner in the tool kit, loosen the 2 clamp bolts and adjust. TPS adjust is a quick job for a Ducati dealer.

  3. You don't even need the paddock stand for adjusting the chain. If you haven't got the c spanner in the tool kit Halfords and Demon Tweeks do large adjustables that can not only be used for the chain hub, but also the shock and adjustable headstock.
TPS is dealer or independant specialist only i think but is fairly quick as Birdie says and should only need side panels coming off.
If it's got a power commander it could've lost it's map, they do that sometimes and can make the bike run a bit shitty too.

  4. Well will get tools for chain and stand as well. Always handy to have.

Maybe it is the way I ride this engine? On my monster I can set off at 1.5k rpm and wack it open at 2k if I want to. Today I noticed 996 sets off with no drama at 3k.

  5. It sounds like you could need the single injector mod/chip,
The T.P.S can be set with a multimeter if you have the time, look up i think its Brad black he has a very
good how to on this and the single injector mod.
