Any Correlation Between Trickle Charger On A Lithium Battery And Crappy Start Up?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by SF Kiwi, Apr 1, 2020.

  1. Hey there all knowledgeable ones, does anyone have any actual experience of the above?

I have had my 1198 for about a month, 2 weeks in I buy myself a trickle charged, set it to lithium and off we go.
I have got what sounds like a Sprag issue on startup, could there be a correlation or is this just me looking for excused for a sprag issue?

I'm sure there are a million and seven variables but fire away

    TIA

  2. A lithium battery needs “waking up” in cold weather, like it has been in recent days. Turn the ignition on and leave it for 15 or 20 seconds before pushing the starter button. Andy

  3. have you upgraded the cables? much as i hate @Exige his cables certainly do make a difference. Well probably any upgraded cables would but he has bike specific kit...

  4. Awesome, thanks for that Andy......With this in mind, on a cold day, ride to the garage, pootle about etc and stop for a coffee, if it happened again, same thing?

  5. I too hate @Exige but his cables and his after-care advice are second to none.

  7. You should be good for just the first start of each day unless the bike has been cold for several hours. Andy

  10. And just as an after thought, the guys do have a point about replacement cables, so I think it prudent to at least check all your connections, especially the earth. Andy

  11. perhaps hate is not a strong enough word!!! lol.. no, i have those cables on 4 of my bikes and in all cases it has transformed the starting... wish i had of installed em sooner on my 748 as the sprag went and cost me a small fortune.. by all accounts the proper cranking power due to proper cables prevents this happening.

  12. Any excuse to take the fairing off again....and again. I'll do that tonight. I think I have cleaned and polished it to within an inch of it's life (the bike)

  15. Hey there Andy, I tried your advice of 20 seconds and it worked...I had the metallic sound again after riding for only 7-10 minutes and stopping...gonna try the new leads and see how that works
