750ss Carb Model Not Starting

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Sideshow, Apr 1, 2020.

  1. If his pump is running and he has the fuel lines all connected to their appropriate place, he should also hear the return flow running back into the tank, when the float bowls are full.

  2. re: item 32 - it's another filter Al, or at least, I know that a filter has been fitted here, it's smaller than the one at the last junction and much easier to miss. It probably wasn't fitted on all models/years.

  3. Ok

so now I have verified that the pump is pumping fuel to the carbs . I managed to cut the fuel hose close to the t fitting, and then prize the spring clip off the remaining hose. So there is definitely fuel getting to the carbs.

I assume the next step is to remove carbs and clean them out?

  4. Item 32 is a restrictor (jet in the parts list), fitted in the return line so that there is a positive pressure to the carbs. On many bikes it is no longer there having been ditched by previous owners, probably when they replaced the pipes or shortened the ends because they were damaged.

  5. ah, ok ^ - would be good to see a part number for that, I have come across minute filters fitted at the "Y" tube junction also.

  6. Part no. is 132.1.006.1B. No longer available

  7. This bike was a gift for me by my wife's, so I haven't had it a long time, the bike is in a bit of a mess from previous owners, it has not been modified, but as with a lot of bikes this age it is missing small original parts . The wiring is all over the place, so i think its going to be a long term fix.

One thing I would like to know is fuel hose routing from the tank, if anyone can send a photo, I originally thought it maybe a kink in the hoses when the tank was down in its normal position , as the first signs of problems with were it would seem to run out of fuel with a full tank, if i lifted the tank on the hinge, it would give me another 5 minutes of riding time before it stopped and so on.

  8. I spent quite a bit of money with a mechanic in Mallorca, and the end result was the bike was worse when it came back to me, in fact it came back with this issue. Im no mechanic but Im good with videos , photos and advice and can follow most things so any help is much appreciated

  9. sounds like a partially blocked breather tube (either side of one way valve)/blocked steel tube in tank/blocked or wrongly fitted breather one way valve, that's why I mentioned trying with fuel cap slightly open as this would highlight a breather problem.

  11. At the risk of being ridiculed for suggesting something so simple can I ask if the OP has checked that the bike is in neutral ? I spent a couple of hours yesterday faffing around with one of my bikes that wouldnt start. It was only when I tried to push it a couple of feet I realised it was in first.

  12. Hi Yes , it is in neutral, rear wheel spins freely, neutral light lit on dash. unless there is a sensor that i need to look for somewhere

  13. Shame, I was hoping it would turn out to be a simple fix. Good luck with it.

  14. You checked that fuel is getting to the 't' union in the hoses, have you checked whether the float bowls are filling? Just curious that it runs only if you manually fill them. If they're not filling, despite fuel being pumped as far as the 't', there could be a very simple issue with your floats being incorrectly assembled, permanently shutting off the fuel supply to the carb bowls.

  15. before i take the carbs off, i want to loosen the screws on one of the bowl covers and put some fuel through and see if its getting through.

one other question i have , on the bottom of each carb the carbs are linked together by a steel braided hose that goes off to a tap union on what I assume is the oil cooling circuit , what is that for?

  16. No need to take the carbs off for now, drop the bowl off the lower one. If the floats have been fitted upside down, (which I think is possible) you won't be able to lift the floats at all and the fuel will be cut off as if the bowl was full. Switch ignition on and see whether there is a rain of fuel. My bet is there won't be. You may be able to pull the pin and turn the float upside down (right way up) and open the fuel supply to the bowl. If that all works, its then worth taking the carbs off for getting to the other carb. If you have a friendly local gynecologist, he might come in handy!

  17. Alternatively, remove the drain plug, drain the bowl of any fuel there might be in there, then try the ignotion and see if fuel pours out...

  18. Thanks so much
, I will head out to the shed this afternoon, now that my computer work is done ! I will let you know what happens

  19. How old is the fuel? I've found on my 600 that a little bit of old fuel sitting in the float bowls means it won't start. If I drain them off, it tends to start first time.

  20. Carb float bowl heaters to stop the fuel from icing up.......tap should point forward for OFF and across the bike for ON.

Some people say they work, some people say they don't......They did on mine.
