Hi all, more help needed please, just checked my coolant level and it’s quite low, I have a 1ltr bottle of Morris coolant, which is blue, the coolant that’s already in the bike is orange , can this be mixed or should I wait until I can get the orange coolant, Cheers
Several years ago, Ducati found a small number of instances where corrosion was found in the engine. This resulted in the change to a new coolant with added inhibitors. Oddly the original colour was blue and the new colour is red. Without knowing which type of coolant the Morris is, I’d be reluctant to mix the two. Just a thought, not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, you are measuring the level with the engine hot, aren’t you ? Andy
Andy, the owners books for various Ducatis inc Multis specify setting/checking the coolant level with a cold engine and include a warning note on the relevant page to that effect
Hi Andy, I have been checking with a cold engine , primarily so I don’t get burnt but also that’s what it says in the handbook, I’m confused now !
No, don’t be, Denzil is correct. I’ve always checked the level hot but topped up when cold my theory being, hot fluid expands so I wouldn’t want to over fill. Hey, can’t be right all my life Andy
The later type coolant is now pretty much an industry standard. It goes by the name of OAT spec. It’s widely available nowadays from different suppliers. Ducati use Agip, but providing you get OAT spec, it’ll mix. The colour is the indicator. Pink/orange ish colour. It’s used in the car game to so it’s easy to get, Halfords have it for instance. The blue stuff is old school ethyl glycol. It can be used, but can’t be mixed with OAT. The blue coolant should be changed every two years, the OAT is good for 4.
