748 Caliper Bolts, Nice Quick Tidy Up

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by aceofhearts, Apr 5, 2020.

  1. Got the new caliper bolts in today which was a nice quick job to tidy up the front end a bit. Thankfully all the old ones came out OK. One started to round but easing it gently back and forwards got it loosened up.

  3. Lovely, but don't forget all the other fasteners when you find the time.:upyeah:

  4. Those brakeline fittings have seen much better days. I would be getting new hoses if it were me.

  5. What torque setting did you use and where did you find it from please?

  6. They look nickel plated - assuming they are youll be back in the same boat in a few years.

  7. The brake lines and nipple I might replace at the end of the year when I do the large service with brake fluid change, but to be honest i'm not going to be replacing every little 'imperfect' bit of the bike, as thats how people get sucked into full blown restorations just because of a few bolts. The bike I will be using a lot, for commuting and weekend rides so having something absolutely immaculate defeats the point, as I will never then want to take it out.

I do however like doing odd little improvement jobs throughout the year to keep myself occupied and get to know the bike.

The bolts were genuine ones from Brembo. I don't like replacing brake components with stainless really, and the last ones lasted 23 years so i'm not too worried about longevity :upyeah:

  8. I would deffo replace the brake hoses if they are also 23 years old - not only from an aesthetic perspective but primarily to improve safety/braking performance.

    Just my opinion though.

  9. Four candles.... no four bolts

  10. I had the same trouble and when I enquired from Brembo they said the bolts only were not available.

So a bit of attention with a fine emery cloth and some clear lacquer from my car touch up kit did the job.

  11. For originality I would want to keep the original rubber hoses but I believe they are no longer available from Ducati. I retro Fitted a set to my 916 about 10 years ago when I did a "back to standard" job and think that I had one of the last rubber hoses they supplied. I would fit braided lines but keep the original rubber item to go with the bike in the future.

  13. Hi..

Did you replace the brake nipples on your callipers..?

Looking to replace the nipples on my 996, do you know the nipple size for these brakes..?

  14. Since my last post on this thread I have changed the brake fluid and in doing so mullered one of the bleed nipples. So I have now replace bleed nipples, banjo bolts and calliper pinch bolts with grade A4 stainless steel. Ideally the pinch bolts need to be low profile i.e. 5mm thick heads not 8mm. But they will protrude anyway so I didn’t bother.

  16. Buy yourself a metric thread pitch gauge, once you know the diameter and pitch of the thread.
It is quite easy to get replacements, you just need to ensure that you have the correct grade of bolt/screw.

  17. Fixed ;)

  18. Agreed, AND don’t trust the Ducati parts list either. I did and now have 4 SS front calliper fixing bolts that are unusable because the official parts list has the wrong thread. Also. The part numbers for the front indicators are transposed. A definite case of measure twice cut once.

Parts suppliers are not much better. Wemoto sent me 10mm x 1.5 bleed nipples for the front callipers when I needed 8mm x 1.25. When challenged they said that they rely on Hel for their brake info and confirmed that over the last 2 years I was the third person to come across this cock up.

  19. Is somebody putting words into other people’s mouths here?

Titanium? Really? At what price, 3 times as much? If you are that concerned about weight saving then it’s far cheaper to have a bloody good crap before you climb on your bike.
