Wow. First, the good news. This evening, I managed to limp my 999 home part way through blat in the countryside with no 1st or 2nd gear, through a combination of good luck and good route planning, plus awesome clutch/throttle/brake skills. Go, me. The bad news. I have 3rd, 4th and 5th gear only (maybe 6th) and can swap between these gears but I have no 1st, 2nd or Neutral. In 3rd, the gear lever feels like it does in 1st, that is, no movement downwards - that's as far as she goes. Obviously, it's not a case of splines on the gear shift lever end so it must be gear selector?/gearbox? On a scale from Your Summer Is Over to You're F'd in the A, Mate, Goodbye, how fucked am I? Should I be thinking of putting a 62T rear sprocket on and stop worrying about the missing gears? Can anyone fill me in, or simply just kill me, as appropriate. I should point out that I cannot afford a 999, I just happen to have one. If the repair is (or costs) more than a tank of petrol I'm fairly boned. Thank you for any messages of support, advice and of course gloating, all of which I deserve. :frown:
Shitty death Loz ,gear selector forks maybe . This is probably your cheapest option if you can diy. DUCATI 749 999 Gearbox | eBay
Asking a bike question on a bike forum Loz? You sure you're in the right place ? ;-) hope it's something simple and easy fix
Thanks everyone who has posted their support, very appreciated. Even you, Bradders mate   Thanks for this, Steve, can you hold onto that for me until next week? Just in case I need it! The offer is hugely appreciated and if I end up buying it, I will have your babies if required. Investigations will commence (hopefully) this weekend - I have heard from another source that the fault may be a simple spring failure job, as Steve suggests. If this proves to be the case, I will offer to sleep with the next person I see
Cheers - the gearbox is fine! Jeers - the total amount it costs to replace a spring that itself costs less than £5. Huge relief, seriously a big sigh of relief ... but I wish I had the experience and skill to be confident of fixing something that is apparently quite simple. As it was, the cost of the repair wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been. Kudos to those that predicted the cause (and thanks, too, for giving me a reason to remain calm) and a big thanks to Steve (Mr R) for his offer and for all those who offered advice, info and abuse
