I was introduced to the pleasures of outdoor cooking whilst working in Australia 40 years ago. In my time, I’ve spit roasted whole pigs, sheep and goat, I’ve cooked with a team catering for people in groups of 20 to 30 up to 150. To this day, I still get immense pleasure cooking over a fire pit or on a charcoal bbq, even if it is just for Carole and I. Like many in this dire time, I have been spending too much time on the internet and my curiosity has been peaked by the variety of bbq alternatives on offer, even here in the UK. I’ve made a decision to buy an Ooni Pro multi fuel outdoor oven but before I pull the plug after Easter, I thought I see what those that are into their outdoor cooking use. Andy
Why cook bits of an animal pressed into a burger or sausage when you can cook the whole animal ? Makes sense to me Andy
Putting fetishes with livestock to one side - I have a Weber which I’m very pleased with https://www.weber.com/GB/en/barbecues/charcoal-barbecues/master-touch-series/ I have a pizza stone and a roast chicken tray, it may be a mental thing but it seems to cook things far better than the cheapo bbqs I’ve had in the past.
Weber have been a market leader for many years, a friend used to cook his turkey at christmas in his. Intrigued you have a pizza stone for it, never thought to look at that. I haven’t got on with the Weber in the past, just like I don’t seem to be able to get the hang of the gas bbq. Food for thought Andy
I was a charcoal snob for years until I saw the (calor gas) light. BBQ on gas is so quick and easy we use it all the time from March to October. So little mess, quick, convenient and controllable. I can’t taste the difference. Have an Outback job but have had others in past. Rate Webber.
Got a Beefeater gas, must be 15 years old still going strong I just can’t be arsed with charcoal as a regular go to
I intend at some time to make this. In the meantime I made mine using plant pots. Insulated with stuff they fill boilers with
One of the best chickens I ever ate was cooked in an earth oven with root veg, was absolutely delicious!
Was lucky enough to go on a Weber bbq course a couple of years ago. Can highly recommend beer can chicken - simple to cook and really tasty. Here’s (hopefully!) the recipe and link to the roaster to put the beer can in / chicken on... Weber Poultry Roaster https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005LR7WZI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NRYKEb8R0ZQGT
Without wanting to take the thread in a new direction, what weber bbqs are people using as some are astronomical price wise, and some not so bad. I mean for very occasional use are the cheaper webers still worth it?
we are on BIG GREEN EGG fucking rocks. my Mrs is professional chef and she recent its the best bit of kit she come across.
I've got a cheapy B&Q gas jobby that we use sometimes . Have also got a Cobb outdoor cooker, it uses a single brickette thing to cook on and it's stainless steel but you can pick it up and move it . It always cooks great . We've had it about 5 years and it's still as good as new . Highly recommended
I've got a Char Broil infra red BBQ grill, though I find it makes more difference how much attention you pay than what you cook on. That said, I do want a pellet fed grill at some point - can't beat cooking on wood.
