Fork Seal .... Driver Tools

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by oldtech, Apr 22, 2020.

  1. I've been trying to fit new bushes and seals , which I've done plenty of times in the past , on various bikes .

So far I've been following the Haynes manual ( and yes , I should know better at this stage in life ! ) but it's only cost me one wrecked oil seal up till now , and that's where it stops .

I'm going to put it on hold until I can get something like this delivered .
There's a one made by Sealy ( which costs twice as much ) but I'm really not sure if it will drive in the large bush , as well as the oil seal
    ..... separately of course .... :)

Anybody used one of these ?

  2. Yes I did my forks a couple of months ago using one like that, worked perfectly.

Mine was from China, about £16

  3. Thanks Steve ....
Did it do a good job on the bush AND the oil seal ?

PS - that spring compressor looks just like mine ....
.... have you been in my shed ?
    :)

  5. when did you make your spring compressor birdie, I’m trying to figure out if you stole my design!

PS oldtech I used one of those £16 China jobs, good tool, just make sure you wash it and then wash your hands!

  6. No point spending half a day making a pretty one for it to be under the bench for years until its needed again.

  8. This is the offering from Sealey
Main advantage is that it's available from UK stock ....
.... but delivery of the other one , from China will be 2 weeks .

It's hard to see if the Sealey tool is going to make contact in the right place but if it does , it's going to apply the force in a circular fashion ....
which surely must be an advantage ?

Anyway , interesting video tutorial here using the "three-prong" tool ....
but it looks like he's got the oil seal the wrong way around , at about 5 min 20
( lip and spring are facing outwards ).

  9. Presumably the Sealey one would have to be the correct diameter for your fork leg, the three prong is adjustable.

  10. There should be a steel "washer" between the seal and the Bush so the seal driver will drive the seal which will drive the washer which will drive the Bush. And with a bit of heat on the fork leg it should all be ok.

  11. Thank you all for the tips and advice .... much appreciated !

I've ordered the "three prong" gadget from China
    Here's my reasoning ... just in case anybody gives a rat's arse ... :)

1] It fits a range of fork leg diameters
2] The business end of the tool can be held in place , while the slammer part
    is worked separately .

Neither applies to the Sealey tool .

On the downside , it's going to be 2 weeks delivery from China , and much worse than that ....
I don't have any excuse now , for the job I've been pretending doesn't really need doing
.... getting the swing-arm and rear shock out , for checking and lube .
    Doh !

  16. That may be stretching things a little .... :grinning:

There's no shortage of other , less interesting jobs to be done
.... it's only excuses that I'm running short of !

  17. Ah yes, excuses. Personally I would have swallowed the extra cost and bought from someone closer to home who could deliver quicker before I lost interest or got too involved in something else. Fair play to you for sticking with it.

  18. I made my own.......pic below shows it nearly completed
