Camcorders

  1. This is a bit random but I just wondered if anyone has more knowledge than me ie >0!

I want to take video from a camcorder to a PC where I can stream it to a web site.

I have some knowledge of web programming but no experience of live streaming.

The first thing to do is buy a digital camcorder that I connect to my PC (via USB, I understand) and then I can make a web site on my PC just to try it out - with my PC as the web host.

So.… first thing to do is buy a digicam and go from there. I would prefer one that has an external mic or a mic input port, so that in future, I can use a dedicated external mic.

I want to spend as little as poss as this is an experiment.

Any comments welcome. BTW, this is gonna be for nothing dodgy - and could end up being bike related AND more importantly, Ducati related... so it is on topic!!

  2. Buy a cheap ‘Go Pro’ copy HD camera that saves to MPEG or AVI.

  3. I want to be able to live stream - not just save files to transmit later. The live bit is quite fundemental.

  4. Plug it into PC with USB cable and use like a webcam

  5. Or use a webcam

  6. So, if I can use a Go Pro as a webcam then I should be able to live stream it?

  7. Or if you have a DSLR already, a lot of these can be connected by usb and run as a webcam also.

  8. I have just realised that the web cam on my monitor is meant to connect to my PC via USB! It doesn't have a mic but I used to do conferences using a headset with a mic. Soooooooooooo, in theory, I have the hardware to start playing. I'll shut up now and engage my brain..... or F that and I'll go back to choosing a new bike!

  9. If you have a DSLR with a clean HDMI out then you can use that in conjunction with a capture card or dongle but they aren't that cheap. There's some new firmware from Canon that means you can use USB out to work as a web-cam but this is only for some fairly recent models and, I think lacks audio so you'd need a USB mic too.

I've just taken delivery of a BlackMagic Design ATEM Mini that takes 4 HDMI inputs along with two additional audio inputs and outputs via USB or HDMI. It incorporates a hardware encoder with various output options and is effectively an HDMI hub, mixing desk and encoder in one package. Of course you need suitable cameras to work with that. One way to use it is to plug it into your PC via USB and it presents itself as a web-cam.

I also have an Epiphan Webcaster X2 which is a single HDMI input device that encodes and streams directly to FB, Youtube and a couple of others without a PC.

OSB Studio is freeware that can be used on your PC to collate video and audio input and push it out to various streaming services.

Fortunate in that I have various cameras, that have clean HDMI out, that will work with these. Only started to gather the streaming hardware at the start of lock-down and haven't had a chance to use it yet. Ideally need to be moved to new house (on hold) where there's better than the shite Internet I have here.

  10. Use your phone. A lot easier.

  11. But how do you get the phone to give the PC live video that you can direct to your web site?

  12. Can’t you simply go direct from phone to website? Must be an app for that, sir

  13. Can't you set up a scheduled stream on Youtube, embed that in a page on your website and then direct your audience to that page for the appropriate time? You could I believe do this from your phone or using your webcam on your PC.

  14. Same sort of thing as channel 900 on Sky (friend told me)...
