Ive done the usual google searches etc and got nowhere except that its quite common but so far I havent found an answer so im hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. On the last ride of last year i noticed the rev needled seemed to be hesitating by a fraction of a second and was quite annoying but the bike otherwise ran just fine. I hadnt noticed it doing it before and I have zero error codes. Its most obvious when you blip the throttle as it just hesitates. Another thing is when you turn it on and the needle cycles it doesnt return to zero but sometimes shows up to 500rpm but its done that for a while as I checked a video I made when I first had the bike. So I searched the tinternet and found a few suggestions such as the ecu earth and crank sensor and I have generally checked every connector that I have come across inc behind the battery tray and found nothing. I havent had the dash off yet but I did nip the ecu earch up tight but it didnt appear loose anyway. I dont know what the crank sensor is or what to look for or if this could actually be the problem. Has anyone come across this before on a 749/999? As mentioned ive read things like "had it sorted when it went in for a service" but thats it. Could it be tps related? As its due a service now anyway. Its just one of those little niggly things but im sure it isnt showing the correct rpm when im revving it. cheers Jc
Well since I posted I have changed the fuel pump and headlight relays due to corrosion and the tacho needle does feel more responsive. Ive found the crank sensor in the manual also so will be investigating that when I have the fairings off next.... probably tomorrow
I had an issue with my tacho back in 08, the needle didn't give a true reading and was slow, reported it at service (still in warranty) but it cleared before I took it in, never had it again and nothing was found at service time
JC One possibility to consider is that the tacho needle is not firmly fixed to the instruments shaft resulting in your symptoms. As far as I know it's not possible to take the tacho apart on the 749/999 ( could be wrong here). Quick google found this: Related Tags: . Flag Problem with 2003 Ducati Monster 1000s i.e. Is my tach broken? I have just purchased an used 2006 with 1800 miles on it. Few days ago when I turned on the ignition and let it idle, I noticed that my tach needle is pointing below "0"! Motor starts up fine without any hesitation and Choke works fine too (needle goes up to 3000~4000rpm). When I open the throttle during the idle, the needle moves too. Just during the idle the needle points below "0".??? I first thought my idle is low... but idle is not rough and it seems fine in my opinion. Has anyone here encountered same problem? If so, how did you manage to fix it? Solutions (1) I have the same problem on my '05 monster 620. I hear it's very common. Upon calling my trustworthy mechanic (not the dealer), he informs me this is quite common. The glue holding the needles in place is apparently not the greatest, and moisture inside the instrument panel screws it all up. He recommended I take an engine speed meter, take apart the instrument panel, and glue the needle back in place at the appropriate reading for the engine speed. I haven't tried to do this yet as the rainy season just started, and I don't have a garage :/ As the tacho is easily removed I wonder if you could find someone nearby who would be willing to lend you their tacho for this test. I would be willing to do this but alas I'm too far away.
Battery is good (touch wood). I noticed it starting at the end of last year when i was keeping the bike outside and since i have replaced the relays it seems to be much sharper but i still dont think its quite right. My research seems to point to corrosion somewhere or crank sensor corrosion or shim but i woulnt assume it is one of these. Im going to have a look at the crank sensor and see if its corroded as its on that side of the bike. Having kept it outside over what was one of the worst winters since god created the earth probably didnt help. Keep the ideas coming guys as i appreciate the input. Jc
