Broadband

  1. I have fibre broadband from EE, as well as my home phone and mobile.

EE celebrated return to work by chopping my broadband just after midnight last night. I know that they can access my router remotely, and so to further celebrate return to work, they switched it off. I haven't bothered ringing to complain as I am tired of their excuses - normally they will blame me for getting up out of my office to switch off The router (as you do) and then screwing devices that use my broadband.

So, I am looking for a new supplier. I looked at BT (who I used to use) and the "special" deal that they offer is to pay more and sign up for 2 years. As I skirted around, I was given the very strong impression that they are bending over backwards to give you expensive broadband that ties you in for years.

The BT exchnge is just down the road.

I can't get home fibre here and I am not bothered about having the same supplier for my home phone or mobile. In fact the very (strong) impression that EE give me is that as you get all of your services from us, then that's you screwed!

Anyone else got a good broadband supplier that they would recommend?

  2. I've been with Plusnet for email and hosting my domain for years. They look like an option...

  3. Virgin works for me... Its fast, unlimited & I've only had to reset it once in four years.

  4. Honestly... I think they are all as bad as each other. or should I say equally as good? And I work for one of them....

The issue stems largely from OpenReach and their grip of the infrastructure and the way they treat the networks that have to use them.

I go cheap, they will all fuck up, it's just when... PlusNet seem okay. I would avoid *cough* the one that had the massive data breach circa 2016 *cough* (I do Information Security, honestly, there are so many face palm moments in that whole scenario)….

I'm with Sky, haven't even been able to get to the login page on their website for 6 weeks.

  5. You can get good speeds yeah, and if you live in a soon to be 5G area it could well be an option to cut you out of a long fixed line contract, especially if you don't use a land line. You can get good 4G/5G routers etc. If you do gaming you will struggle with 4G from a latency perspective and a lot of the super low latency stuff in 5G isn't really ready yet.

  6. Unfortunately (for me), the mobile signal here is so poor that my mobile ends up using my broadband for calls!

  7. I did wonder this, could you get one of those mobile phone contracts with an unlimited data plan and then tether all your devices to it? would it breach their "fair use" part of the contract?

  8. I am always wary of TalkTalk but I went back to them middle of last year and to be honest, I've had few complaints in that time.

    Edit: for b/b only

  9. I have 100gb per month on my mobile with EE, I asked about running other devices off it and they said no problem and no restrictions. However the OP states mobile signal is piss poor so sounds like this is not the solution.

  10. When I lived in civilisation, I used to be with Virgin and had fibre to the house. I had TV and broadband that I can't remember ever going wrong. Unfortunately, now, I could only get Virgin through the BT exchange. However, I know that they now do this and so I will investigate!

  11. TalkTalk are on my barred list, unfortunately!

  12. You're not alone but I have to date not had any unforgivable issues from them.

  13. I've known people to do this. I don't think that they care....

  14. I think -but certainly don't know- that if you are going to do this, you might be better waiting for the arrival of 5G? Being stuck in a long data contract when the available services are due to change considerably could be something you'll regret.

My Virgin contract expired years ago, and I'm hoping to get 5G, try using it for everything on a tether, and if it works I'll be dropping Virgin.

  15. I have been using EE 4G broadband for years now. Started off with a 100gb limit and then a few years ago they brought out 200gb and more on new tariffs. This comes with a proper 4G router rather than using a phone to tether.

My home telephone line gave such a poor speed that 4G was infinitely better even with restricted data usage so I cancelled the landline and went mobile only.

Recently I saw that EE were now offering sim only contracts with unlimited data (1000gb fair usage) so I signed up for that - popped the sim in the router and it works fine. Much better deal than their 4G broadband specific tariffs and it now means I don’t worry about hitting the data limit so I have purchased an external 4G antenna. I now get around 40mb both up and down which is more than adequate for my needs.

  17. Good. I think that I'll be going with them.

  18. I highly recommend Zen Internet, not necessarily the cheapest but as far as I'm concerned the best.
Their tech support is brilliant and I think their the Which recommended broadband provider this year again.
