851 And 888 Forum Demise > Rebirth ? @mods

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by Jon Wright, May 9, 2020.

  1. Any ideas from the IT savvy types as to how to find out who the server was and how to contact them?

  2. Who is hosting it (I haven’t looked). If you can identify the domain and site hosting companies you can ask those companies to contact the admin directly (billing details) and pass a message to them that way. If anyone needs help with this then PM me and I’ll be happy to reach out to hosting company...

  4. Do you know anything about Jimmy's health in the past Steve?

  5. Hi Chris,
I don't know anything about Jimmy's health, but like most of the 851/888 Forum members he's been on there for many years.
The average age of the Forum members was probably north of 50 (we did have some members in their 30's though) and quite a few well into their retirement years.
I'm just short of 63 have owned my 851 for 22 years, my '79 900SS Bevel based special for 41 years and my little '74 250 Desmo for around 15 years..
Members of the forum owned most of the genuine Works 888/926/955's and quite a few owned Customer 888 Corse models.
We had members who raced them all over the World, even at the Classic TT where the 888/996cc owned by Stafford Evans holds the fastest ever lap of the TT course by a Ducati 125mph ridden by James Hillier.
Stafford's race team run a couple of the parts that I've modified for them (at cost/NO profit) for the love of the model/sport.

  6. Steve and everyone. The Domain Registrar is a company called eNom. I have opened a case with them with my ask to contact the person registered (I assume this is Jimmy). This is just the domain and the site is hosted elsewhere. So even if we can get the Domain up and running, we may well have issues getting the hosting company.

I am waiting for a reply from eNom.

  8. For me, It was the fact it was focused on the 851/888 series that made it for me. I joined from the beginning but my ignorance in regard to running cost embaras me.
We did at one time pay a donation and I just assumed this would be requested when necessary again. I am and will be eternaly greatfull to all and every one I have met and conversed with over the years. If anyone can bring it back it will be a given.
Best of luck to those trying to do so.

  9. A quick harvest of the wayback machine?
At least to collect the information. ... without republishing until you have permission

  10. Nice to hear you are all good and well @Steve Robins, lets hope it all gets back up and running, there is a ridiculous amount of knowledge and advice on that forum

  11. Having just bought an 888 I was working my way through 150 pages of technical issues and learnt a load. Be a shame for all that info to be lost. Fingers crossed.

  14. I'll bump this thread every day or so just to keep it on the 1st page/in the eyeline of those who might benefit from it, or be able to help.
The info' on the old forum shouldn't be allowed to pass away without a fight, it was almost like a bible to 851/888 ownership.

  16. I would be very supportive of resurrecting it, especially as I am about to rebuild a 888.
It looks like the domain has been hijacked now, so it is about recovering the content under a new umbrella.

  17. Steve R... you have PM

  18. All - Ian (Fire3500) and I are trying to find out what the status is and if the site content can be accessed.

The previous Domain Registrar no longer controls the Domain name and this is apparently now with Go Daddy, with a potential future auction in mind. Getting the domain is one thing, but that is just a pointer to the website.

The biggest issue is trying to find out where the site was located and we have even tried people we know to contact the previous guy who ran it for the many years it was serving the community. If anyone has any contact details, or ideas, please share through a PM to Fire3500, or myself.
