996 Difference Between Base And S 996?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by bradders, May 27, 2020.

  1. As title, his can you tell the difference? I thought the base had shows shock and S had ohlins and nitrate Showa forks but can’t find an absolute answer.
    Thx

  2. I stand to be corrected, but I believe the upgraded S had an Ohlins shock + steering damper, with Showa forks that had gold-coated legs (TiN).

Also has the meaty SPS engine, but no visual difference from the 996.

  3. I’m looking at a couple on eBay and trying to work out if S or not. Iirc Biposta wasn’t a model, it was a type of model. Ie both could be bip or mono.

both have standards steering damper but ohlins rear and coated legs

  4. My 996 has the coated fork legs standard rear and steering damper.

  5. I'd wager the 996S was a 'whatever shiny bits are left before we start the 998' kind of project, so it could be pretty close to SPS or not depending on what was available at the time - probably doesn't help with your search though

  6. I know about the is it - isnt it Ti engine bits. Its outside I'm keen to understand, as the motor is quite different.

  10. I haven't looked into it before, but my understanding was that it was only the S from 2001 onwards (end run)
that had the better spec motor. All the lads that used to race the classics in Sweden all foraged for these later
    bikes and the "better" engines.

  12. BiPosto just means dual seat AFAIK :) Mono presumably has the single seat. Nothing else to do with the build spec.

  13. Do they run a different ecu though, so just lifting the seat will make it obvious what the lump is?

  14. i sold my 996s about 2 years ago,
as standard they will have a 50mm full exhaust including the manifolds, and ohlins rear shock and standard steering damper an Ti coated forks. mine put out 127 at the back wheel with a powercommander.
the ECU will be the smaller unit, and not the P8 from the SPS, and this is the source of many of the complaints of the fuelling on this model.

  15. My understanding is as already has been said, the 2001 S run out model got the better motor, Ohlins rear shock and the top of the range Showas. I also believe it got an aluminium rear subframe. Colour coded wing mirrors were IIRC available to order as was the Ohlins steering damper, they were only standard on the R. Like the runout 748, dealers added bits to sweeten the deal in 2002. I think the Marchesini 5 spoke wheels were standard from 2000 although I did read somewhere, the 3 spoke wheels were still around until 2001. Andy

  16. Mine too. 1999 build. 2000 registered.

EDIT. But mine is a Sigma Grunter:cool:

Second Edit. Paul, you are welcome to have a ride on it when we next see each other if it would help your decision making. Glad to hear you are looking at a proper motorbike ;)

  17. I just checked for ya.

According to Falloon any 996S (Special) of 1999 or 2000 was destined for the USA where (thanks to California regulations) they couldn't sell the 996SPS so Ducati took the 996SPS frame & chassis and put a 'bog standard' 996 engine in it.
In 1999 & 2000 the US only Ss had 5 spoke Marchesini wheels, 43mm Showa forks, Ohlins rear shock and Ohlins steering damper and some carbon fibre bits.

In 2001, with the advent of the 996R the 996S was launched to sit between the 996 and the 996R. It had the 996SPS 123bhp engine, available in BiP or Mono. However, it uses the 1.6M ECU of the 996 not the P8 ECU of the 996SPS. It used the standard 996 chassis (not the 996SPS race chassis) with TiN coated Showa forks and Ohlins rear and Boge steering damper, grey frame, grey 5 spoke Marchesini wheels.
