916 Engine & Wheel Paint Colour

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Dartanion, May 26, 2020.

  1. I am looking to touch up some of the flaking paint from the engine on my 916 - after searching about some are suggesting that the best match to the silver/grey engine paint is - Simoniz engine enamel aluminium - does anyone know if this is accurate or have any other suggestions?

I am also planning on getting the wheels blasted and powder coated in the original gold colour - does anyone have any idea what the paint code is for these or suggested paint colour.

I tried a google and forum search but only came up with a thread from back in 2012 that discussed the engine paint which wasn't particularly definitive.

    Cheers.

  2. RS Bike Paint. Costly but good.

  3. +1 for RS Paints, they do little touch up bottles as well as spray cans.

I used the bronze gold (plus the lacquer they supply to go with it as the paint itself is water based) on my frame and wheels. It's a good match with one caveat. The original paint is 20+ years old so there is some fading and you will, on close inspection, see where it's been touched up.

As for the engine crank cases I used Simoniz Engine Enamel. On the 748 it was the rear of the engine and underneath the crankcase covers that were flaking. I actually did it with the engine in the frame (albeit everything else had been removed) with some judicious masking. It's a very good match colour and finish wise.

The crankcase covers are different colours on different year bikes I believe but for mine I removed them, stripped the old paint off with POR Paint Remover, rubbed them down, then sprayed them with Zinc Phosphate and Simoniz lacquer (to make the paint petrol/oil proof) For mine it was a perfect match.

Having searched, I didn't take before and after photos of the crankcases (maybe I did but I've 15,000+ photos to go through:confused:) but I did take photos of the crankcase covers. I also did all the rocker and cam covers as well.

  5. Thanks Paul, I'm getting the wheels done by a local firm so I just need to give them a heads up on the colour match, so if I let them know that the best match will be the bronze gold from RS paints then we should be good hopefully.

not sure if we are at cross lines on the engine paint, the black finish on yours looks excellent but its the silver section to the rear and the front of the engine that I need to patch up not the black crank or clutch side - so is that still the Simoniz engine enamel but in the matt aluminium that I'm looking for - like this one:

  6. Thanks Jack - I'll google them

  8. An automotive paint shop should be able to colour match to c.99% likeness which will then match the 20 year fade of the original paint. I don't believe RS paints will give you the actual colour code they use, trade secret, they'll just sell you the paint either in a touch up bottle or a rattle can and I guess your paint shop will need it in a tin so he can put it in his spray gun.

  9. Thanks Paul, I've just ordered some of the Simoniz enamel and clear coat off of Amazon so hopefully all good on that. My local paint shop have agreed to speak with RS and see what they can organise - might be that they will order some of the touch up and then colour match it themselves.

  11. Will do Jack - the engine or the wheels (or both)?

  12. More how your shop gets on with RS. Just curious.
