748 748r Injector Swap

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Duncati, Jun 3, 2020.

  1. So, following on from my question regarding swapping the injectors to IWP189’s from an 848. After the positive help and info, I bought a pair off fleabay and have just fitted them to the bike.
Wife tells me it’s a bit late to give it a test run so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and wait until tomorrow to crack it up.
The original injectors only have the one hole whereas the 848 injectors have 12, so in theory should produce a much finer spray and give better fuelling at small throttle openings, see what tomorrow bringso_O 61FC3228-1A15-4870-B20F-DC8EF19369BB.jpeg FF7F69EB-15FF-4A21-8F71-190310E84B88.jpeg

  2. I did the same to my 996 which has 748r injection system. Bike started and idled straight away, but I reckon it will need setting up as the injectors probably flow more fuel per pulse.

  3. I’ve just fired it up and let it idle for a while, all seems well, seems more responsive on a quick blip of the throttle whereas before it would almost need to clear its throat before picking up cleanly, so am quite happy with initial findings. You’re probably right about needing setting up properly as the 189 does deliver more fuel, but for now it’s a step in the right direction. Need to get out and give it a trial run :upyeah:

  4. Yeah, I wished I convinced my mate to do this to his 748r when he had it (as I was riding it more than him and it was kept in my garage, best of both worlds!). The explanation from Wilf at MotoRapido was that at idle the single whole injector unless it's new and in perfect condition ends up dribbling fuel onto the back of the throttle butterfly and you just get a really badly metered delivery. The 12 hole seems like the solution but honestly I didn't think it was THAT easy to swap them, I thought you needed different wiring etc so this is good to know.

  5. It took me literally an hour to do late last night, the injectors are physically identical size wise but night and day different with regards spray pattern, they do deliver more fuel so will have to get that sorted when the world gets back to some sort of normality. The table below shows the only difference between the IWP089 and IWP189 is the ammount it can deliver and the obvious spray pattern 51D082F4-7751-400C-9CD1-60A7D2DF93E5.png

  6. The idle spray is equally bad, their time comes when more fuel needs to get vaporized. See the video of my 999 idling, there comes a closeup where you see the beautiful mist of the 12 hole injectors.
And you do need to do a re-map, they change your fuelling a lot (and you will use less fuel afterwards

  7. They are infinitely better at idle than than the single hole injector, agreed on the remap, just need to get that sorted and I’m convinced it will be a much nicer ride than it was... lovely looking 999 btw :upyeah:

  8. This wasn’t the most precise of my statements. What I wanted to say is that on idle all the fuel ends on the butterfly anyway (which you can see on the video), regardless of how fine you spray it before.
So these fine injectors start to bring a huge benefit above idle as soon as the butterfly is cracked open at least a bit
