Ducati Voltage Issues

  1. Need some help on this one...

    Ducati Panigale 1199, 2012

Bike had zero issues all of last year. Bike had zero issues at the beginning of this year for about 150-200 miles over the course of 2-3 weeks.

Suddenly one day, I rode the bike to work, went to leave after 8-9 hours of sitting in the parking lot and it wouldn't start. A few guys helped push me and it pop started, rode it home.

Sitting in the garage at home, it died again. I assumed maybe the battery was bad because I didn't put it on a battery tender all winter in my heated shop, so I bought a new battery.

New battery seemed to fix the issue. It started faster than it ever has before, good again.

It sits again for a day or so, went out to check it and it starts fine. Let it idle for a few seconds and then shut it off. A couple days later, no juice. Won't start, lights dim, etc. Battery wasn't the issue.

Here is where it gets confusing...

Jump start the bike, take the cables off, it runs fine and ran until I shut it off again. I rode it about 15 miles to my shop and it had zero issues. Battery was at 14.3V while running. As soon as I shut the bike off, it would not restart and the battery was at 8.6V.

Did some testing, thought maybe the rectifier was bad. Thought was that the stator was putting out 14.X volts but maybe not enough amperage to recharge the battery in the case of bad diodes. New rectifier, freshly charged battery, turn the key and everything seems promising. Press the starter button and the start goes from full power cranking down to clicking and not cranking in about 3 seconds. It lost voltage that quick. Did some more testing and while on the starter button, the battery dropped from 11.8V to 9.3V in about 4-5 seconds of holding the button. Once you let off, the voltage slowly comes back up. With the key on, the battery has a draw of a 1.75A, which I believe is the fuel pump running along with the ECUs and auxiliary lighting. With the key off, there is no draw.

    Any ideas?
    Rectifier is good
    Stator charges normal to 14.3V
I'm going to have the battery tested this weekend, need to let it recharge. It is a brand new battery with a warranty, so if it is just a bad battery, it will be exchanged fairly easily.

  2. Certainly sounds like a bad battery to me.

  3. Interested to know people's thoughts as I'm on my third 1199 battery in 3 years.

  4. Probably the worst thing that anyone could do to a bike for a couple of reasons.
The battery only exists to start the bike, you start it and take 50% out of the battery doing that, then shut it off a few seconds later, only 50% left when you next try to start it. Are you surprised.
That few seconds that the bike was running had the engine running with the cold oil trying to get around it, and then you shut it down.

  5. 4-5 seconds of turning the engine over is a long time imho.
As has been said, the battery is specced to be big enough to start the bike but without much margin, as weight, space and also expense will become an issue.
