1260 Running In

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by WillnSam, Jun 7, 2020.

  1. Hi all, I’ve just sold my 1200s and picking up my new 1260S in couple of weeks. This will be my first new bike so wondering if any tips of running in a new machine. thanks in advance

  2. Everyone will have their own opinion on this but the general consensus among engine builders is do not go particularly easy. The only thing in modern engines that need breaking in is piston ring to cylinder interface. Ride normally with occasionally moderately hard acceleration for around 4 seconds, probably 4th gear might be good for this, followed by 4 or 5 seconds of throttle off deceleration. do this 2 0r 3 times on a ride. Keep it under the max rpm the manual recommends during break in, 6k or something like that. Definitely don't want to putt around at low RPMs, rings may never seat properly resulting in an oil guzzler

  3. Its all out heat cycles...give it 3-4 heat cycles and your good to go.

Maybe limit revs some until you change the break-in oil if you want to.

  4. I agree with this method:

  5. All you need to be aware of is that the ECU will record and retain all your riding information. If you choose not to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation and the bike implodes, the Dealer is perfectly at liberty to tell you where to go.

IME, don’t labour the engine in too low a gear translates into, do not expect the bike to enjoy 30mph in 3rd gear, do not expect the bike to enjoy 40mph in 4th gear. Do not cruise in the same gear for miles, change gear, go up and down the box but do not under an circumstances during the running in period use 6th gear. Do get the 600 mile service, the oil the bike is delivered with is specific to the running period and will not do the job of regular 5w40/10w40/5w50/10w/50. To be fair, post 1st service build the revs and have fun. Andy

  6. There's no reason to avoid 6th gear during break-in. If you're on the highway at 120 - 130 kmh you're at 4500 rpm and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. You can easily vary your rpm in this situation without lugging the engine in any way

  7. Get the dealer to write it down for you and there will be no doubt about the procedure.

  8. I’ve always had a fairly open mind on running in procedure.

I don’t labour the engine, but don’t spend much time near the redline until the 1st service is carried out.

After that, all bets are off!
