St2 Warm Starting Problem.

  1. Hi, I have a 1997 ST2, just fitted new battery and heavier duty cables. First cold start up is perfect, turns over fast and fires. But after running for a few miles at normal temperature then switch off, it takes three or four prods of starter before it decides to turn over. Battery is charging as normal, have checked all connections. Once it decides to turn over it fires straight away. Any ideas if this could be solenoid or starter bush problems, or anything else? Cheers
     
  2. Sounds like meter time! All I can suggest it starting at the solenoid, check voltages when starter button is pressed.

  4. I have changed ST2 starter brushes (£5 a set) without removing the starter, not a difficult job.
     
  5. Difficulty starting when the engine is hot (and therefore all components) is often down to a poor earth connection somewhere, as the heat builds the resistance increases so when cold no problem, when warm problem.

    Check and clean all earths associated with the starter circuit

  6. Sounds like a plan, I did give batter earth a good clean when heavy duty cables were added, but will have a look at wiring from starter button etc

  8. As said about starter solenoid. The trigger round pins aren't very good and also eventually sticks on.
    Could try a spanner across the solenoid heavy duty side to see if it turns over ok. Should help decide weather solenoid is the problem.
    Clamp a jump lead on the earh/neg side ie engine case to battery neg, to prove an earth problem.

  9. My 96 SS used to have starting issues when warm.
    It was down to an intact fuse not carrying the current because the blade was twisted, reducing the contact area.
    So make sure your fuses all have nice flat blades and no light oxidation between fuse and holder.
    It might also be worth switching the kill switch on and off several times in case there’s poor contact in there.

There's also the weak relays to check, they tend to be more problematic when warm when they are on the way out, my side stand safety switch relay did this till I bypassed it - but any relay could be on the way out. My previous Monster had the same relay as main ignition which did the same.

  11. Thanks for that, I have tried another solonoid on from a know good starting bike and no better. All earth's been cleaned, but I will try the jump lead you mentioned . Next on my list to try is new starter brushes.
    It's not actually a big issue as it has always started after a few stabs of the button, but I guess one of these days it might not
