ducati 999 eobd light

  1. hi after a bit of advice of those more in the know. ive owned the bike for 2 years and during that time the eobd light has come on occasionaly on setting off from lights but has always gone straight off once the clutch is out. ive put it down to a quirk as the bike runs perfectly.

yesterday as i pulled into work the light came on as i was opening the work garage days and stayed on till i parked up 5 seconds later and when i turned the igniton off and then on again it was still lit.

on leaving work that evening the light went off as soon as i was moving and the clutch out. there are no error codes. is it a quirk or can anyone direct me to what it may be.

  2. I've heard this described as a neutral gear sensor fault.

My 999 has had the intermittent symptoms you describe for about, ah, ten years now. Beginning to think that it isn't a problem

  3. Could be the micro-switch on the clutch lever

  4. Thanks Loz was thinking the same. Chris daft question but what does the microswitch do and why would it gve this fault

  5. Main function is to allow you to be able to start your bike in gear eg when you stall. A faulty switch has been known to be the cause of intermittent EOBD fault like the one you describe.

Hopefully, Nelly will chip in with words of wisdom later.

  6. ok the bike starts in gear fine so do you still think it could be the micro switch. I'm guessing then that an intermittent fault with no codes is nothing major to worry about

  7. Diagnosing intermittent faults is difficult and a process of elimination. Fortunately the cost of a clutch switch is not prohibitive (part number 53940361A) and if they are like the brake switch then there should be an even cheaper alternative microswitch that can do the job (RS Components or eBay).

  8. Thanks mate if I disconnected the switch and the light still came on at the same times would that remove the switch from being the problem or is not that simple?

  9. It's not as simple as that. The switch sends a negative signal to the ECU. I would eliminate it by using a known good/new switch. Looking at the wiring diagram the switch just closes a -ve loop so bridging the wires would complete the circuit but it's not a way I would advocate for testing whilst out on the road.

  10. okdokey mate didnt think it would be that easy. ha. has anyone got a spare microswitch that they want to sell then so that i dont have to buy a brand new one or could someone advise which other models fit as on ebay the only ones appear to be from america and are quite expensive.

also i presume its the same part number for all 999 inc the s model

  11. Doesn't this generate an error code, have you checked?

  12. Hi yes have checked and its not showing any codes. Managed to get a new cable for a tenner so will give it a go.

  13. That's the problem with intermittent faults, if the EOBD light is not illuminated then you can't do the recall using the dash buttons. There will be codes stored in the ECU, recoverable with diagnostic equipment, but you have the problem of attributing it to the problem as other slight things can cause a fault to be stored eg engine falling to start first time.

I could live with a £10 speculative spend to see if it solves the problem :upyeah:

  14. I'm quietly confident that its clutch related as virtually every time the clutch was in the light came on and then off as soon as clutch was out. We will see
