Sorry, completely outside the Ducati World. I wonder (yes, I do) if much of the level of confusion and strife that we seem to suffer in this country is down to BoJo? Without a clear leader, this country descends into belly button inspection very quickly (I assume that the Co-Op is fine for toilet roll at the moment) Bristol City Council have been dodging the issue of Colston's legacy in Bristol for years - but like any good Bristol council, they cannot make any decisions - so the crowd make it for them. The Colston Hall have been having a good think about their name for years - I doubt if anyone could beat an arts venue for hand wringing! And now we are all set to worry about a programme recorded over 40 years go. I suppose that one unexpected result of the lockdown was the amount of hand-wringing that could be done! https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/...e-fawlty-bbc-just-wont-get-the-joke-dw9p0wfrl
I think the confusion and strife is actually down to the same old dickheads jumping on any old cause to run riot and cause as much civic unrest as possible. They have not clue 1 about the statues they deface or the actual lives of the people they want to remove from history and nor do they really care. Churchill rescued this country and Europe from Nazi tyranny and allowed those cretins the freedom to abuse his memory. Had A.H. won the war, these clowns would have been shot. The cenotaph and other memorials commemorate the lives of the millions of ordinary soldiers that gave up their lives for the same cause. Colston was of his time, but he was also a massive benefactor to the city of Bristol and helped tens of thousands after his death. But hey, why let reason and facts get in the way of a rabid mob of thick lefties determined to dump a lump of metal into a harbour. The only mistake government made, was getting rid of the water cannons. That is the best way to cleanse the street of fu**wits hell bent on causing fear and destruction Rant over
The thing about rhodes is that they want the statue down, but want his wealth being paid to the university for the international scholarships he set up and that's where most of his wealth ended up. The scholarships were world wide and allowed anyone to approach the rhodes trust for a busary grant to be educated at or through Oxford. Now you would consider, this would be the last thing any bleeding heart lefty would apply for, take and get, a degree based on rhodes history and money but the names who have, will surprise a few https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodes_Scholarship What is even more surprising is just how often blm is poorly informed, Mandela back in 2003 understood rhodes wish that his money was used to help commonwealth and Africa's brightest and best, to have an oxford university education that was aligned with a skill, so those people could return to their own countries after Oxford and help rebuild and improve their nation So in 2003, the nelson mandela legacy foundation formed a partnership with the Rhodes trust. https://www.mandelarhodes.org/about/story/ sadly in recent times, the trust that was meant to help people learn skills to then make the country better for their countrymen, has seen some take the degree, stay in the U.K. to then seek to remove the degree for others, crazy kids all over the world. Thankfully the mandela-rhodes trust still funds people from all around the world and this is the African class of 2020 https://www.mandelarhodes.org/scholarship/scholars/
I believe that it was the combined efforts of the Allied leaders plus massive input & losses from the Russians in the East that rescued the UK and not solely WH.....
I agree in part but we're discussing the present social unrest in the UK. Many other factors were in play before the Allies became 'The Allies'. But that is for possibly another discussion not on this thread or it'll descend into a whataboutery thread IMHO. Lets stick to the question asked. I think we're starting down a worrying path in that views are becoming very polarised along political divides. I do think that broadcasters were right to pull these programmes until some semblance of common sense could be established. Maybe these so called offensive programmes should contain a warning for those that may mis-understand the intent of the writers/entertainers. As for the our country's history in the the slave trade you just have to accept it happened and it shouldn't be seen as though we're glorifying slavery by having statues of figures from that trade in open public spaces.
