Would any members have any knowledge or opinions on the areas in and around Taunton, areas like Bathpool, Creech St Michael which are just on the edge of town.
I do know Taunton is one of the places earmarked for a new ‘Garden Town’ by the government might be something to be aware of but I’m not sure where abouts
Yes, Any information is appreciated was there yesterday (6 hour round trip) looking at areas/houses and work also been checking any flood area,
There are numerous areas of landslide in Somerset and Devon, so look carefully for signs of movement. https://devoncc.sharepoint.com/site...XhLWHhMSi1hMGhpNDgxdz9ydGltZT1oanVfTjhJUjJFZw
Bathpool and Creech St.Michael have been and continue to be, subject to massive housing development over recent years, as you will probably already appreciate. Creech used to be a completely separate village but is set to become just another suburb of Taunton in the next couple of years. Between the Monkton Elm garden centre and Creech was all farmland until a couple of years ago, as is the case in much of the country. I have work colleagues that live on the new estates and one of them who bought a Persimmons house has had nothing but problems. Basically they've been thrown up with variable workmanship and it took them two years or more before their road was even tarmacked! Depends what your budget is and what you are looking for, but personally I'd look a little further out at some of the surrounding towns and villages. It can get very busy down around Bathpool (under non-Covid conditions) and the motorway junction improvement will be going on for at least a couple more years, which is causing chaos. There will also be a large industrial estate behind the Park and Ride there too. To put things in perspective, I live a 25min drive from Taunton in a village called Curry Rivel, rural area, properties available for similar sort of prices (perhaps a little more) to the area your looking at. Wellington, Ilminster, Hemyock, Bishops Lydeard, Langport might be worth a look. Flooding is an issue anywhere on the Levels though so be aware!
@Samurai is right about the amount of development happening in the Bathpool / Creech area East of Taunton and the traffic can be a nightmare but if you need to get into/out of Taunton or onto/off of the M5 at rush hour then you won’t escape it by living in any of the Villages further out in the same direction ... it’ll just make your journey longer and more tedious. Personally I’d advise you to think about whether you want ‘town life’ or ‘village life’. My family did both over a fifteen year period - town and then village (North Curry - in between Taunton and Curry Rival) and the two were very different. The villages can be quaint and pretty and living in the countryside of the Levels for example is charming, but access to Taunton from the villages can be a pain. Public transport is shite, Taunton taxis are amongst the most expensive in the country and the parking in town is awful. If you and your son are both working I’d suggest looking at what your budget will get you further into town. You’ll have easy access to amenities, travel for work will be far easier and you can easily access the even more beautiful countryside of the Quantocks, Blackdowns, Mendips, Exmoor and Dartmoor at the weekend by motor.
A couple of nice areas near to town was around the very nice looking Queens college, Wilton and Sherford which look a more expensive area. A good point about town/village life. Thanks all for the tips.
