Temp gauge goes blank

Out on the fuglystrada (1000DS) this morning and it's running great, but twice the temperature gauge went blank. It gets up to around 50 degrees then just displays lines rather than the temperature. Anyone had this before?

had a 996 loose its temp reading, traced it to a dry joint in the ecu.
