959 Engine In A 899.

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Graphy899, Jun 24, 2020.

  1. HI, after blowing my 899 engine I've bought a 959 one to replace it. Will the 959 engine work with the 899 gear or will I have to replace other stuff like injectors and things?
    Regards
    Steve

  2. It can be done, you need a 959 loom and throttle bodies at the very least, possbly ecu etc.
I have more or less everything in stock.

  5. Thinking about it you would need a 959 ECU as well.
    I will send a pm.

  6. Was flat out in 5th went for 6th and lost power then heard a very nasty rattling and back end started to lock up so grabbed the clutch and free wheeled to the side of the track. Took sump off and metal filings galore and part of a seal. That's as far as I've got with the engine.

  7. @Graphy899 thats a kicker.
    What mileage were you at.
Asking/curious as my 899 is at 10,500 mls.
    Ta.

  8. Around 5k, about 2k road miles the rest track.

  10. What exhaust are you going to be using? The stock 899 has smaller pipes than the 959 - headers will fit but the characteristics will be different - various options on what to do about it.

  11. Hi not thought about the exhaust, was just going to put the 899 one back on. What are the options?

  12. It will run with the 899 exhaust but I don’t think you will get the best out of the 959 engine without some form of tuning.

The stock 959 has 60mm header pipes compared to the 55mm on the 899 then goes into the euro 4 cat and silencer - overall I would say the stock ecu map will not suit the 899 cans well - but you could just see how it runs.

I have put the 1299 cans on my 959 - 60mm pipe and a lot less weight than stock 959. I have disabled and cut out the flapper valve and put a sprint filter on it. Then rather getting a custom map on a dyno I went down the rapidbike evo route - from what I have read it should adapt to the changes I have made but I haven’t done enough miles for that to happen yet.

Depends on how much you want to spend?

It this a track bike or a road bike?

And if you are replacing the dash, ECU and black box have you got the matching key/ignition - they are all coded together I think - so you might find the immobiliser will kick in if they don’t match.

The Ducati website has all of the parts catalogs available for download so it might be worth cross referencing the relevant pages to check the small differences.

  13. My bike Is just for track. The exhaust is standard but been decatted. I have the tune boy kit on which I really like as you can adjust a lot of things yourself using the laptop yourself. I'll get it back together then do the snagging later. Thanks for your reply.
