748 Rear Suspension Tie Rod Bar

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by John E, Jun 27, 2020.

  1. Hi guys.

I’m servicing the suspension on my 748S and noticed a crack in the adjuster nut on the rear suspension tie rod bar (the one that adjusts the rear ride height).

Before I go hunting for a replacement, I thought I’d ask if there are any upgrade options anyone has tried and could recommend? If not, is there a good place to get the spare parts? 813F597F-41B4-415A-8B49-1855EC9D837C.jpeg D5B6D663-C526-4D61-BEC3-DEBE4908D7D2.jpeg

    Thanks

  2. Make sure you get the correct nut. One end is a right hand thread and the other is a left hand thread. Talk to your local authorised dealer or Craig at Moto Rapido. Andy

  3. The left hand ends and nuts are marked with a line around them.

  4. That’s a left hand thread nut. You can tell because it is marked with the little grooves on each corner of the hex, correspondingly also on the hex on the rod itself.
This is to alert the unwary not to try to undo it in the normal direction, otherwise one will actually tighten the nut. As the nut is aluminium alloy, over tightening it will quickly result in it cracking, as yours has.

Although you can buy a slim left hand thread nut elsewhere, I would recommend getting the correct ally nut from Ducati.

  6. Thanks everyone. I’ve never adjusted the suspension so I assume it was the previous owner. Another quick question. The ‘good’ end Without the cracked nut also has little taper inserts (first pic) and everything moves freely. The ‘bad’ end looks like it has the same but they don’t come out.... are they supposed to be the same fitting both ends? I.e. are they supposed to come out and are therefore seized? 7. It’s been a long time but I think my inserts were not loose. Andy

  8. They are the same both ends and should come out although sometimes they are quite tight.

  9. Measure it carefully eye to eye so when you undo stuff to replace you can put it back the same
Once you gave the measurement I would undo both ends lube the threads with copper slip then put them both all the way in with the nuts on and undo Them the same amount to get your eye to eye length back

  10. Research rear ride height and get the datum tool ... then you can see where the height is On your bike and also see what altering it does

  11. Based on the manual it shouldn’t be longer than 261mm. Mine is set at 269 and probably cos one end was seized up. I’m definitely going to reset all suspension settings and get the tool as suggested. Thanks everyone, really appreciate the help :)

  12. Do research ride height tool ... ignore the measurement length of the tie rod that’s not the datum number

  13. They can be loose where the bolt goes through them. Too much clearance.

Some I made for a tighter fit.. takes out the slop in travel.
    Also a new mount bolt.
