  1. Can I ask a question about engine management lights?
05 999 bip, I started it up a couple of weeks ago, engine light, switched it off and on again, it refused to go out, took the other bike.
I thought I'd try it today, started it three times to check, no warning lights, ran like a dream, never missed a beat, would anyone know why?
I have had it come on during a ride, then went out, I don't know firstly why it comes on and secondly how much damage could be done.
Is it triggered by several things.
    Any help appreciated

  2. You want to pose this ? in the 999 section Mike but, at the risk of accentuating the off topicdness, do you not get an error code or message when the EML comes on?

  3. No, no code or message, just the light

  4. Has anyone had this problem before? When I switch off my running 1998 996 Monoposto, the engine stops and all the lights in the instrument cluster go out, as expected. However, 4-5 seconds later the oil pressure and neutral indicator lights in the instruments come on. This is with the ignition switched off. If I turn the ignition on & off again. The warning lights go out, only to come back on seconds later. If I slip the bike into gear the neutral light goes out. I have disconnected the battery to preserve it. Bike starts & runs. Bizarre.

  5. Sticky relay???

  6. 1962K1W1, when the lights come back on with the ignition off on can you check to see if other services such as horn, indicators, brake lights and head lights are usable with the ignition off. Also Ducati never made a MY98 996 so is it a 98 registered MY99 996 or a MY98 916SPS, the reason to ask is due to differences in the wiring diagrams. Final question for now, do you have a spare yellow 40A ignition relay?

  7. Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate the support. 10th Digit of the VIN is a W = 1998 build. 1st registered in Japan ‘99. That’s about all the info I have about her. ZDMH200AAWB002288, so I’m guess it’s a MY99.
With the ig switch in off, operating the indicator switch causes a “relay buzz” from the rear end, stops when I push indic cancel. Starter button does nothing. I’ll check what the other services do and report back tomorrow. Do you mean I should try another ignition relay? Would that Yellow 40A relay be on the battery case/bracket RH side? Same general vicinity as the starter solenoid?

  8. My first though was two relays misbehaving, or a sticky relay and poor earth. The yellow relay does a lot of work and carries up to >30A load, it is implicated in a number of different types of spurious electrical faults. As it wears the contacts get sticky, can corrode, the switching coil can overheat and the relay stops working reliably. it should be replaced to eliminate it. That relay energizes all the relays supporting the services I mentioned on the previous post some of them are switching permanently live circuits. If you have one of those fail it is feasible to get a back feed from the constant live side which energizes the yellow relay switching coil and switches the ancillary services on without the ignition in the on position. It may also be worth checking/replacing or at least swapping the two relays under the seat to eliminate them. You could try pulling the flasher unit down by the battery lhs to see if that is having any affect as it has an output to a common +12v line (Light blue) that feeds the idiot lights. Starter solenoid is usually on the front (rhs) of the battery, yellow relay is usually on the rear (lhs) of the battery.
Try to do one thing at a time and note what happens, then report back

BTW Falloon shows 179 (inc 47 yellow ones) MY99 996 Monos built for Japan in 1998 which most likely included your bike

  9. I went back to the garage and had a look at the RH side. Spotted the yellow relay You pointed me at immediately, pulled that plug, reconnected the battery, voila, no idiot lights on the dash. I’ll pick a new one up and I think that will be that. I’ll report back. Thanks Denzil the Ducati.

  10. 1962K1W1, the concern is why that relay is switching itself, it may be OK and the fault lies elsewhere

  12. Hi Denzil the Ducati. I borrowed a ignition relay of known capabilities from a guy I know. Plugged it in, immediate result Talk about a massive relief, thanks for your guidance. I have to return the borrowed relay and track one down for myself but I now know it’s all going to be okay.
I replaced my fuel line fitting o-rings while I was there too as they were a little weepy.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I’m indebted to you.
