The Trackday Conundrum

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by bradders, Jun 25, 2020.

  1. The majority of times this is all it needs.

If I ruled the world though I’d have a few more of my own rules for good measure. Yes you’d lose some people with more rules implemented but I’m sure more people would consider trackdays if there was more order and control over the fellow participants. Many people want to ride their bikes fast but in a more controlled environment. Look how popular some of the road bike only trackdays are.
Not 100% sure how UK rules work as it’s a long time since I did a UK day. But here goes...

    Novices-

    No overtaking in any corner.

    No overtaking in braking zones.

    No overtaking on the right.

    No slipstreaming.

You go off track you exit track and have a debrief and a time out.

    Inters-

Overtaking on left side permitted in corners with 2m rule.

Overtaking in braking zones allowed but with 2m rule.

Overtaking on both sides 2m rule.

    No slipstreaming.

Off track and you exit track and a debrief, but given one chance to stay on track or you go home.

    Expert/race-

Overtaking in corners both sides but a 1m rule so no rubbing.

Overtaking in braking zones 1m if deemed safe. If contact guy making the pass goes home.

    Slipstreaming allowed

Any excursion off the track (excluding mech issue) or crash and your day is over.

  2. Agree with this except the slipstreaming. Racing yes, track day no. Just takes a missed gear from the lead bike and it’s gonna be a big one. Fook that o_O

  3. Oooh, not nowadays Nick. If I took a swing I’d put me back out. And knee. And hip

  4. From NL fb this evening, for some balance

    Sunday 28th trackdays.

Now I'm very aware there has always been rumours and urban myths surrounding how a day runs and what goes on behind the scenes so here is today's event logs.

    Cadwell.
LOWER - 2 two reds, hospital visit with a dislocated finger.
MIDDLE - 2 fallers, 1 red no injuries.
    ADVANCED group....Zero fallers or reds.
7 was moved into more suitable groups, 5 up, 2 down. 1 requested a move.
    Ran until 5pm

    Snetterton.

6 red flags total, only 2 in the afternoon both in the lower group.
Unicorns did 10 group moves to get everyone in more suitably matched groups.
1 rider sent home for wreckless riding
Rain at 4.30pm but most was packing up by then. Ran until 5pm

So despite what you maybe lead to believe, there is quite a lot that goes on which customers will be absolutely oblivious to.

Well done everyone, especially advanced group Cadwell Park as we did have a number of extremely rapid riders out today from the BSB paddock plus the far more formidable supermoto and CB500s that gave them a good spanking

  6. Are some tracks worse than others?

Donny seems to have a lot of flags.

  7. I sure hope it's better here in the US next year when I hope to go to my first.
I dont think you should be applying new rules. Instead try new punishments...

Sue the track of you are hurt... I am not much for legal action but if both the track and promoter get taken to court even if they dont lose they will implement harsher punishments for those that break the rules. Because their lawyers will fear the cost when they do lose.
Create a national registry. 3 strikes and you are banned all tracks (UK? Europe?) for a calendar year.
2 strikes for the first year back. 1 strike the next year and then a 5 year ban.
People will obey so that they can still enjoy...

Yes I know that there is always risk. You might even have to sign away your legal rights...
But did you really? You signed on for acceptable risk that comes with motorsport. The way it would be if the rules were followed. As soon as they say but we cannot enforce the rules better because...
Your lawyer says... so that is worth more than a life? or loss of limb?

  8. Sounds wild out there. My only experience of track days has been Killarney in Cape Town, where my son and I have taken our 748 on several occasions with an SA Ducati club. Smallest capacity and oldest bike there on pretty much every occasion coupled with two pretty cautious riders. Rode in both the novice and intermediate groups and no issues whatsoever, just really enjoyable (and educational) days. Sadly I think I’ll give the UK Track scene a miss.

  9. Donny & Snett seems to attract throbbers. No Limits also seems to sadly

Donny runs noisy days and people with loud exhaustS seem to be more likely to be bell ends

  10. Should just take their flags off them. Let them keep their phones. Sorted ;):upyeah:

  11. :astonished:

  12. I've been doing trackdays at Donington for over 20 years and it's always had lots of flags. There are a lot of technical corners that catch people out.

  13. It’s 2 for me mate. Melbourne loop and the last one. Love the rest :):upyeah:

  14. I love them all mate but it took a lot of practice to ride them like second nature. Redgate and Mcleans you run out of room really quickly as a novice rider because you turn in too early and Coppice catches people out because they turn in too late.
    Craners needs respect as well.

  15. I was there Monday and Tuesday, thought it was OK, can't remember a red flag in the fast group on Monday,

  16. There were a few red flags in the fast group!!!! One on the sighting lap!!!! My two boys were out in the inters and one dick proper stood one of them up ! My other lad was behind and saw him do it!! The guy put his hand up to apologise but sorry! Not good enough! I went looking for him but he must have been hiding! The result was my lad not going back out at all! It really spooked him and that’s just unacceptable! A chap sadly lost his life yesterday! I don’t know what happened but it was incredibly sad!

  17. Nothing to do with riding, I read was off track. Guessing heart attack

sometimes people make mistakes or, as Adam is describing with his brakes, failure happens. It’s if they do it over and over it’s an issue

  18. Seriously? Another death at Doni yesterday?

  19. I'm thinking of doing a trackway this years after 25 years of not doing any.

I wouldn't do Donington or Snetterton as they're in my mind high speed tracks that don't appeal, I'm thinking of Oulton as I recall it being technical more than speed orientated. Anglesey as I'd like a Jamie Witham track day. Although I have considered doing a Ron Haslam day should he open this year.

  20. Oulton is high speed and technical mate. Even Anglesey has fast cranked over sections.

Haslams would be a good shout bud :)
