916 Airfilter Replacement Time

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by XH558, Jun 29, 2020.

  1. Just for interest here are two graphs from my 996 taken about 10 minutes apart. One with over bell mouth filters and one without.
    Red line is without ;)

  2. So you have the BMC ones then or another brand.?

  3. That's concerning as you don't want big plastic / metal lumps being sucked into the trumpets.:scream:

  4. Think it was JHP.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  5. JHP manufacture non foam ones for on the side of the airbox then,as i'm confused which route you've taken.?

  6. Sorry I thought you meant the crappy foam filter. I went with the filters in the pods attached to the airbox (bmc ?). But the bike has come a long way since then, now has corse air tubes with gauze at the airbox end and filter foam stuffed in. Only used on track and good for 150hp

  7. I'd be interested to view the layout that's in place if you've a picture loaded up on your camera.?,if not no worries.

  8. Sorry nothing on my phone, and I'm a long way from the bike

  9. Now that ducv2 has brought this up, sell your race tubes and get some 998RS ones. Problem solved! :)

  12. I have a NOS JHP filter (bought from @cookster a couple of years ago) which doesn’t fit my 998.
£40 + postage, although I see I may be too late!

  14. Thanks for offer Joe,much appreciated but yes the piper arrived thursday, moreover the JHP filters are out of stock for 5/6 weeks,so you can name your price on this item..

  15. That would have been perfect for m, especially with the carbon bit thrown in for free.;)

  16. DucV2, not advocating either option, but did you get a comparison trace after each one had been mapped correctly? Otherwise the 10 minute comparison just demonstrates how the mapping is thrown with slightly different air flow characteristics. I have seen similar A/B differences between the different spec (Zeuna and Termi) 45mm exhaust headers used on 748s which mostly disappear when mapped correctly. Its interesting as you say but proves nothing

  17. The bike had been mapped with the filter and then the dyno guy suggested a run without and that was the result. If I hadn't stood and watched I wouldn't have believed it.
Later research suggests the the foam filter affects the airbox resonance but that's above my pay grade to understand :D

  18. @Denzil the Ducati Just for the record it's a nonstandard engine with plenty more ponies under the hood than in a normal situation,it was set up at my local with the itg filter from day one many moons ago,so if i've lost a few BHP it just doesn't matter at all in the greater picture.

  19. In defence of the bell mouth airfilter though, they keep the crap out of the engine. The tank/airbox seal is not the best and you will always find some grit stuck in the oil on the airbox sides.
And if you crash and pull the tank off then with a bit of luck nothing will get into the cylinders.

  20. Exactly my reason for using one. I don't care about losing a few horses, I want clean air in my engine.
