1098 Exhaust Baffles - Buy Or Borrow...

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Fudoshin, Jul 6, 2020.

  1. Good afternoon,

my new 1098 needs an mot and has termis on it (as it should).
It’s got the holes for fitting baffles/db killers but it didn’t come with them - any idea where I can buy a pair or does anyone have a pair I can borrow (covering insured postage each way!).

I do have the standards cans but don’t really want the faff of changing over just for an afternoon...

Appreciate your time and any assistance...

  3. Should pass OK, my 1198 went through with akras and no baffles. The tester did remark that half of drivers don't see you so they may as well hear you

  4. I never put baffles in my bikes. Sometimes I get an advisory “Noisy Exhaust” on the MOT but still a pass.

  5. A 'noisy' exhaust isn't an automatic MOT fail - the Govt website simply says that an exhaust will be checked to ensure it is secure and "Not too noisy" - so a fairly subjective measurement.

Searching for more detail, I dug up the MOT Inspection Manual for Motorcycles
    8. Exhaust noise
Exhaust noise rules and inspection for motorcycle MOT tests.

    8.1.1. Exhaust noise
If possible, you should assess the exhaust noise by revving the engine to approximately half the maximum engine speed. The engine should be warm before you carry out this check.

It is not possible to rev the engine on twist and go type motorcycles.

The exhaust system and silencer should be in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the motorcycle is not clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar motorcycle with a standard silencer in average condition.

    Defect Category
    (a) Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted

So, still subjective and therefore seems to depend on the examiner's own parameters as to what is reasonably above the standard sound, or not. However, if the bike was fitted with Termis when it left the factory, then they are standard silencers, no?

  6. I've got slash-cut Termis on my 1198S, didn't get the baffles when I got the bike. Never had a problem with noise at MoT time, not even an advisory.

  7. Had an advisory on mine last time, just says “Exhaust noisy” bit it’s never needed baffles on my Termi clad 1098s to get through an MOT

  8. There is another thread on here ref exhaust noise. It shouldn’t be an issue unless mot tester is a knob.
